The Stages of Sleep is described by most as Indie Gypsy Rock. They have been compared to such bands as Patrick Watson, Beirut, Alt-J, and Gogol Bordello. Accessible, danceable, intricate, and subtly textured, their sound defies expectation and consistently impresses audiences.
Based in San Francisco, The Stages of Sleep was first dreamed up by long-time friends Seth Paris and Jason Ardiles. In the summer of 2008, Paris had recently returned from musical studies in Ghana, and called up Ardiles to get together and collaborate. Ardiles had been honing his songwriting and performance skills in solo as well as collaborative efforts for years, and was ready for a project that was more – more dynamic, more improvisational, more colorful, and more unpredictable. Their vision was grand – music that crossed genres, eras, and ethnic boundaries – they set no limits. Over the next few years, the two collaborated with fellow childhood friends, drummer Steven Horgan and percussionist/mixing engineer Max Savage, as well as bass player Brian Wilkerson.
Take some solid rock energy, and then add a blend of Gypsy and Latin rhythms, plus some instrumental virtuosity. There are only a handful of bands on this planet, capable of being quite as corybantic, devilish, or fun as The Stages of Sleep. Amidst the current days of musical mediocrity, these guys provide the energy and excitement to get your adrenalin pumping furiously. It’s the kind of thing that when you’re listening, you can’t help but move to the beat.
Once in a blue moon a truly original band comes along; sometimes they may remain unpopular compared to the array of mediocre acts out there that gain more recognition. There is no justice in this, it just happens. I doubt however that this will ever happen to The Stages of Sleep. Either way you slice it these guys make music for the soul, mind and feet, that is pretty hard to resist. Energetic and original, they can make a party happen within 8 bars of music, guaranteed!

Rarely do you hear something that sounds so completely fresh and groovy at the same time. The Stages of Sleep fuse elements of art rock, jam band, gypsy, rock and pop music in a way that I believe had yet to be done. So who cares what the genre is. Does it even have one? The harmonic complexities will tug at your soul, and each song is catchy, making you want to move, but is also ethereal and bittersweet in places, forging “Carousel” into a stunningly, and hauntingly beautiful album.
Rich, complex, whimsical, magical, uplifting, chilling, intriguing, captivating, and addictive are part of the adjectives you could throw around to describe the sound of The Stages of Sleep. But their style is so unique and original; you’d have trouble trying to compare it to anything else. Their work is a monument to musical and artistic claims of originality and singularity.
The melodic lines and trueness of sound that can be heard throughout their songs, sets an entire different approach in a world dominated by anything electronic and where heavy-handed post-production is considered infinitely more fundamental than the music composition itself. The Stages of Sleep, rely almost entirely on performance, arrangements, and melody, or rather, at the heart of the craft of music making.
“Carousel” undeniably candidates The Stages of Sleep, among my best indie album of the year contenders. From beginning to end, this album will continue to amaze you. With powerful vocals, edgy beats, intense melodies, and raw lyrics to back it all up, “Carousel” just gets better and better the more you listen to it.
