Tres Hanley-Millman is an opera-trained singer best known for her work on stage and screen. A SIREN’S ODYSSEY, her third album, features a handful of dreamy, atmospheric original songs as well as glossy mix of adult contemporary and theater tunes
Conceptualized on idea of taking her listeners on her personal journey, we are willing travelers. Songs such as Music of goodbye, Moonfall, and perhaps the most beautiful offering on the album, a medley of On My Way to You /You and I, showcase her vocal chops and knack for lyric interpretation. She makes you feel.
There are new age Celtic overtones in the title track A SIREN’S ODYSSEY, which she and the arranger Daniel Moctezuma co wrote. And Sail Me There. For me, these newer pieces are the most striking, perhaps because they are the least familiar.
It’s not the typical collection of old shows tunes usually delivered by those who trod the boards on the Great White Way. The arrangements are lush, and original. There are several dramatic ballads like the soaring Once You’ve Been in Love.
A SIREN’S ODYSSEY sits dead center at the crossroads of classical crossover, pop, and musical theater.
Miss Hanley-Millman certainly has got the chops to carry it all. However I would find it interesting to see what she would do with a singular all cross-over or all pop album. I feel this Siren still has more exploration to do. To find her own sound, where I think she’ll make even more ground.
Meanwhile the journey is certainly a beautiful one along the way.
Recommended.
