Tony Peterson of the The Tallahassee Megafanzine wrote: “Ancient Stereo is a Florida rock band based in our very own Big Bend area. The band was founded in 2010 by Fernando Diaz as a means to perform songs he had written in a live setting, collaborating with as many musicians as possible in the process . They can be best described as a fusion of the blues-driven electric guitar sound of the 60’s combined with 90’s alternative rock, sprinkled with ambient experimentalism. Interesting to note is that Diaz has stated that for the most part, his lyrics are self-contained miniature novels, having more in common with J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman than with Paul McCartney. In an age where super hero movies and films adapted from fantasy novels capture the imagination of our nation’s youth like never before, perhaps this is the start of something new. “

Ancient Stereo have just released a 3-track EP entitled ‘Digital Taurine.’
The addictive opening track “Recall” is grounded by a solid bassline and rhythmically punchy electric guitar riff. Drummer Anthony Alderiso rolls in Fernando Diaz’s emotionally amped-up voice, as he growls his way all across the track. Riley Morgan keeps the pace coming with some ragged lead guitar interludes.
Out off the blocks and right from the first track, it is evident that the band writes lyrics and performs music that is just a little bit different from the “standard formula” we hear from most bands these days. If you’ve probably heard enough of the un-original “standard formula” of songs to last a lifetime, then Ancient Stereo delivers something different that your ears will probably crave.
The second track on the Ep “Red Handed,” demonstrates that Ancient Stereo maintain the honesty of a great garage band who create easy to play but tightly constructed and infectious chord patterns that groove contagiously. They get back to rock n’ roll basics with star making attitudes, pumping out stellar indie rock songwriting and energy.
“Incarnation no.9” uncovers the band’s slower melodic side, as they quietly slip into early Radiohead territory. In that the song seems to inspire listeners to contemplate what it all means rather than just how it sounds. This is mellow and mainstream. Everything is delicately kept inside the comfort zone and with a quick dial of the buttons by a savvy music producer, it would be comfortably radio-ready.
By and large, Ancient Stereo recycle the best bits from past garage/punk and alternative sounds, in gloriously entertaining fashion and regardless of their retro influences they have their own instantly identifiable and catchy sound, which will hit listeners from all sorts of different angles.
When this brief Ep came to a close, there was not a second’s hesitation before I hit play again.
Enough said!
