Indie-pop artist Kenny Fame is also a poet / singer-songwriter based in Harlem, NY. His debut CD “Kenny Fame: The First Album” is a mix of sentimental: Indie-Folk / Urban-Funk / Country/ Electronic/Dance-Pop; that is well needed breath of old school air that gives new music a burst of life.
Fame who has been described by some, as the runaway sensation of the season, has the unique ability, to blend indie and pop music into a mix of bold soundscapes, top 40 hooks, and metaphoric lyrics.
Love or hate him, Kenny is bold in his intentions. In fact on one of his websites i read that his interest is “to rule the world”! Tha should give you the measure of the man and the artist. It was with this in mind, that I was expecting something totally different from Fame’s music, and I wasn’t wrong.
In a couple of his latest recording adventures Kenny has also tackled a few covers, giving them the Fame treatment. Miley Cirus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ was no exception to the rule!
Whereas Miley’s version slams and crashes her heart in a rapture of sentimental calamity, Kenny drags and slithers his soul, one octave down, through a quagmire of heavy despair. His approach is sullen and moody, as he almost talks his his way through the heartache.
To get a better idea of what I’m talking about, a similar comparison could be made with the classic song “Knocking On Heaven’s Door”. There’s the original, somber Dylan version and then there’s the boisterous, high energy version by Guns and Roses. Ultimately though, there is no ‘better’ version, just different intepretations of a magnificent song, which reach listeners in alternate ways.
Yes, after hearing Miley’s ranting lament, Kenny Fame will shock your system with his diverse, almost laid-back interpretation. But that’s exactly his intention! Kenny knows that you can’t rule the world, following others, instead you need to beat a brand new path of your own.
And that’s what he is doing with his cover versions and on his own originals which can be found on the recently released 7-track Indie-Pop album, “Kenny Fame: The First Album.
Kenny’s life motto is “Love me or hate me, both are in my favor. If you love me, I’ll always be in your heart. If you hate me, I’ll always be in your mind.”
