I SET THE SEA ON FIRE are an English, Power-Indie-Trio originally formed in 2007. The outfit are well known for their dramatic and energetic live performances at prestigious venues all around the UK, including headlining festivals, academy’s and private events alike.
A synthesis of electronic and organic instrumentation allows their audiences to soar to ecstatic heights through heart pumping anthems, as well as explore the pits of despair in bittersweet haunting melodies.

The lines between punk, indie and the mainstream are continually blurring, and as a result many indie groups are threatening the charts in a manner that would have been unimaginable some years ago.
I SET THE SEA ON FIRE drift around the territory also worked by Two Door Cinema CLub and The Kooks. Only the ISTSOF trio are darker, meaner, murkier and harder to make out.
Listen to the opening song ‘Colours’ which is also the title of their 4-track EP release. Hard and brash synth riffs, rip through the menacing, marching “Another Brick In The Wall” drum-beat, while the backing vocals splash out Adam Ant styled anthemic shoutbacks. This is 80’s meets 90’s in the new millennium British synth-pop revolution.
The second track “Young Guns” once again take us back to the 80’s New Romantic sounds, reminiscent of the stylish and danceable bassline dominated numbers forged out by cult group Classix Nuoveaux. ISTSOF keep their sound more raw, sparse and basic, but the groups appetite for making danceable tracks is evident.
‘1985’ is without a doubt the most catchy track on the EP, with it’s joyous handclapping beat and clever guitar hooks. This is probably the direction ISTSOF should explore with more ardour, in my book, if they are going to be looking for commercial success.
The closing track ‘Lullabies’ winds down the beat a bit, with a more ethereal and emotive performance from the band, which is highly effective and together with ‘1985’ forms the highlights of the “Colours” EP.
The combination of Peter Jenkins (Bass / Vocals / DJ) and Billy Washington (Guitar / Vocals) albeit I SET THE SEA ON FIRE, is just about what you’d expect from an incredibly young British indie band who combine catchy melodies with up-beat, accessible music.
And whilst they work towards breaking new ground, ISTSOF are slowly realizing their potential with “Colours” as they progress and perfect a formula, that in the near future should guarantee enough surprises and strong tracks to make them an infectious and consistent indie band on the world map of music.
