Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Hamish Anderson has performed over forty shows in the US in 2015, including seven showcases during SXSW, as well as shows with Los Lobos, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Wynona Judd and Blues Traveler. In 2014 the 24 year-old blues/rock guitarist went even one better, by opening for none other BB King on his final tour in the US.
Hamish’s self-titled debut EP was released independently in 2013. His second EP, Restless, released in 2014, with his debut full-length album set to drop shortly. In the meantime Hamish Anderson has unleashed the first single, “Trouble” from the upcoming album. This is a type of song that you can just lean back and listen to. Hamish has a great feel for playing “live” music instead of cookie cutter sound. It’s guitar, its blues, it’s great songwriting.
Not only are his improvisational talents extraordinary, his studio work is refined and accomplished too. Hamish Anderson’s guitar playing is crackerjack sharp, his stage presence is strong and his voice is polished – all fitting seamlessly together on “Trouble”. In fact, Hamish is really starting to sound like his own persona with this track.
Which may sound like a silly statement, but is rather fundamental for any artist in a genre known for its emulation habits – Who doesn’t want to sound like a legendary blues guitarist who came before them? Hamish manages to escape the syndrome by sticking to his own formula.
In a world where the blues is on the endangered species list, it’s great to see a bright young artist keeping the vultures at bay – Which means that over and above being courageous, this Australian lad has talent. His music may be fairly new compared to the great sounds of legendary bluesmen, but no doubt, his music will become timeless. His influences are apparent, yet individual. His sound is evocative, almost nostalgic, yet unique.
If electric blues or blues-rock is your thing, it doesn’t get much better than this. Hamish Anderson’s shines like a blues beacon of electric guitar energy, demonstrating his abilities again and again, he will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the near future!
