Sun.Set.Ships: “Man.Must.Explore” finds a warm heart at the center of its electronics

Sun.Set.Ships is a three piece progressive electronic band who plays atmospheric, airy, mellow music. The band consisting of Conor Bellew, Ciaran Curley and Ryan Mulligan released their debut EP “Man.Must.Explore” on the 19th August 2016. The beats are a consistent blend of percussive ambient music, wafting atmospheres, and harmonious vocal tones that are distinct to this band.

Despite these comparisons, in no way do they bow to these trends, but at most maybe tip their hat to them. Very airy, soothing, and sometimes slightly comforting synth future-pop, with guitar timbres makes for extremely refreshing and new-feeling music.

SunSetShips-CoverThat doesn’t meant that they can’t, or don’t deliver gritty and energizingly crunchy soundscapes, because “Song For Brothers” quickly dispels any doubts. It’s just that Sun.Set.Ships has its hallmark style in a deeper, richer, and more engrossing direction. Case in point – “Sinking Islands” and “The Only Heaven There Is”, which is full of kaleidoscopic imagery delivered in a sweet and pure, singing tone meant to mesmerize your senses.

The music and percussion skitters and swirls around the words, pulsing in and out, while the whole seems honest, sincere, and beautiful, as Sun.Set.Ships somehow finds a warm heart at the center of their electronics.

The smoothness and the crispness of this EP is amazing, as songs like “Honey & Lemon” and “Colours” gently roll summer down and sets the tone for steadily moving into fall. The melodies will haunt so many dormant emotional recesses of your brain, it’s like seeing a familiar face you recognize but can’t place.

To hear a band that appears to be doing what they’re inspired to do rather than spewing out forged personas is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise choking industry.  The lead vocal executes subtle changes in tone that adds depth to every song, which is sung with sincerity and passion. The voice will draw you in and sounds haunting in places.

From when the opening track “Sand Needs Saved” sets in, the arrangements are dynamic, multi-toned, and with each layered song having a neat progression. These 6 elegant creations reaffirm what an art it truly is to make good electronica.

For those who like modern alternative electronic music with blends of indie, pop and chillout sounds, “Man.Must.Explore” will seem like manna from heaven. The way these guys handle the electronic sounds in their music is very tastefully done.

Nowadays we’re overwhelmed by a large number of electronic bands that simply deliver matter over substance. Sun.Set.Ships are ready to take the musical scene by storm and are starting the journey – that we all probably want to continue for many years –  by  putting their right foot forward. A most satisfying debut indeed!
