5 million views in two days is how French Montana and Drake shared their much anticipated visual for “No Shopping”. Just when you think no one buys albums anymore, Drake cracks all kinds of album sales records, and just when you think that videos are irrelevant, Drake is featured in one that takes a single to a new world.
That’s exactly where “No Shopping” is right now, a new world. The fact that Drake makes a practice out of turning diss verses into hit verses gives him all of the stripes that he needs. Ask Joe Budden. French Montana on the other hand, creates bangers, but a lot of times his bangers feature so many heavy weights the songs take on a life of their own and becomes the featured artists’ song. And that’s what happened on “No Shopping”, due to the Drake – Budden thing – So how about a new lyrical take on this banger?
Up to the plate steps hip-hop artist King Cotz, a 20 year old unsigned rapper, songwriter and lyricist from Richmond, VA. Last time out Cotz dropped the song, “Six Rings” featuring NiX, and produced by King Leo. King Cotz calls this remake, and re-produced version, “8 God”.
The (re)production was handled by Abid on this one. So just how do you handle remaking a hit song by two superstars? Well firstly, you don’t pretend and believe you’re going to do it a whole lot better. That would be obnoxiously presumptuous, no matter who you are. You simply do what King Cotz set out and ultimately achieves in doing – and that is do it differently. This would more appropriately be called creativity as well as an exercise in broadening you musical experiences and explorations.
King Cotz kicks the track off, with the by now, classic phrase, “Sippin’ on the drank, sippin’ on the drank”, but that’s just about where all the similarities end. Abid’s beat is a whole lot darker, and King Cotz takes a completely different direction lyrically as he continues: “strippin’ all the dank, strippi’g all the dank. Living my life like I’m always getting paid.”
“8 God” is certainly a grow-on-you kind of song, just like the original “No Shopping”, and a visual would really take it over the top. Currently working on his upcoming album, “Hated On My Fate”, King Cotz continues to show his musical growth on this song, as well as his unflinching courage in taking on any type of song… even if it is already a major summertime hit.
