Jason Springs: “Blue Collar Bones & Busted Knuckles” – just sit and listen, redemption will follow!

Jason Springs is a roots/folk/rock songwriter living in Keeling, VA. He has been writing and performing for around 5 years. Jason has played throughout VA and NC, and just released his debut album, “Blue Collar Bones & Busted Knuckles”. The best thing of its kind to come down the pike in many a moon, this debut effort is a modern album, but it harkens back to the glory days of blue-eyed rock, rhythm and soul. You’ll hear faint echoes of The Band, Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, Tom Petty, John Hiatt and Steve Earle, as well as bona fuse soul legends like Bobby “Blue” Bland and Sam and Dave, as Jason Springs infuses a blend of authentic legendary influences into his own brand of gritty roots rock.

I frequently take a chance on unknown artists, just for the thrill of when the album is an absolute stunner. From the first few bars of the opening cut, “Danville in the Dust”, I had a feeling this would be a great ride, Jason Springs does not disappoint. He puts down some high energy music that feels familiar, yet new. It has an old Americana rock n’ roll vibe, filled with exuberant keyboard riffs and blazing guitar slashes, backed by a heavy bass beat.

Pop this baby in the car, crank up the volume and head down the road with a smile on your face, and a hand slapping the steering wheel! Hard to define, but good enough to make the miles glide by. This is the album to do that.  The beat and music will not allow you to be still.

If you are not moved by any of the songs here, check into a morgue. It will take only one listen to discover that this is the real stuff. There is not a bad song on this record. Buy, borrow, steal this recording and just sit and listen to it. Redemption will follow.

Maybe kick off with the back-to-back groovers, “Wishful Thinking” and “Nawlins’ Faithful”, to get you into the mood, and then go full swing into “If These Strings” to complete the cycle. Now wind down with the mid-tempo acoustic flows of “Rose” and “If I’m Lucky”, to savor the intense grit and whiskey-stained timbre of Jason Springs voice, because that my friends is the high point of this album, along with the songwriting of course.

Most of the tracks will keep you on your feet, stomping a little jig, so if you are looking for the same kind of garbage that is put out by most artists these days, don’t buy this album. But if you are looking for something that truly reaches your soul grab this.

“Blue Collar Bones & Busted Knuckles” is bluesy, gritty and bad ass music, written by an able wordsmith. This is what you would call heart and soul music. Raw enough to catch the sights and sounds of real life, yet somehow thoroughly polished in a way that is organic, relatable and not forced. It took 4 bars of music to fall in love with Jason Springs and blow my mind!
