Fumasa, is a rapper/producer, originally from Maryland, who lives in LA to pursue his artistic career. A first generation American, with refugee parents from Peru and Russia. Fumasa who’s lived around the world, has a desire to share his experiences, and through his narratives, make waves in the rap game, and change the world in the process. His latest attempt to do just that is the eclectic single “Gatsby at the Function” (Prod. IVN), taken from his upcoming mixtape.
Fumasa effortlessly sews this song together by pairing lyrics that make you shake your head with a smile and a beat that is nostalgic yet progressive. I have no idea how he does it. This is a feel-good track that elevates your mood no matter the situation. Fumasa is a livewire performer who keeps his listeners on their toes. Crucially, he has the tones to pull it off, and a terrific production. Together they deliver songs which are both boundary-pushing hip-hop and audibly steeped in the genre’s history.
Whereas a bounty of other rappers lean into the continued proliferation of druggy trap or trans-global pop, Fumasa takes a sharp left on the surprising “Gatsby at the Function” (Prod. IVN), doubling down on his instincts, his sustaining drive, and his singular artistic vision of quirky and joyous rap that aspires to uplift its listeners as much as challenge their notions of what rap should sound like in 2017.
This recording may surprise the rap world with its sophistication and charisma. Its off-kilter flow and seemingly impenetrable positivity, will make it earn a place near the top of 2017 year-end lists and cementing Fumasa’s presence in the underground scene.
“Gatsby at the Function” (Prod. IVN) challenges its listeners to engage with something downright lovelier than usual; consider the brightness, the swing, and the groove, compared to nearly anything else on the radio.
The human voice is the real star here, layered and harmonized dutifully, as Fumasa both raps and sings. He is also something of a full spectrum rapper, no matter what he raps about – accessible to both ends of the casual and hardcore rap-fan spectrum alike.
He puts his all his skills together on “Gatsby at the Function” (Prod. IVN), to make a nice witty word play track with a high grade production. Fumasa gives us something different to enjoy and it is worth the listening time. This is very good!
