Deaf or Glory: ‘Anger Management EP’ – If you like your rock n’ roll big, thick…and intelligent!

Deaf or Glory is a 2 piece band with a combined age of 100. Says Steve and Stewart: “And just because we’re not ‘young and deep’, doesn’t mean we don’t have ‘issues’. We’re a simmering mass of unresolved rage about things as trivial as people not waving ‘thank you’ when you let them through in traffic.”

The band’s debut ‘Anger Management EP’ is out on all digital formats in August 2016 and features three tracks “about big decisions, arguments and dementia.” Recorded at Brighton Electric studios (Foals, Architects, Royal Blood) and produced by Josh Harrison (The Cure, Royal Blood, British Sea Power, Tigercub).

The Mastering was done by Pete Maher (U2, Jack White, The Rolling Stones). All of the profits from the track ‘Fading’ will go the The Alzheimer’s Society to raise money to fund more research into dementia.

DOG-LOGOThe ‘Anger Management EP’ crosses colossal guitar chords with the most volatile of hard rock melodies, and it’s as LOUD as loud gets. This collection is beginning to end a sonic work of art. I don’t think I could call it a concept EP, I certainly would like to, but it definitely has a cohesive feel that makes listening to it end too soon.

Maybe it’s a hint of classic progressive rock attitude. At the conclusion of these 3 songs, I immediately hit play again. I don’t remember being as addicted to anything in the last few months. There are great guitar parts, soulful singing, layered sound textures, rock solid rhythm and percussion, quirky thoughtful lyrics and melodic growling bass. These fellows threw everything in, but the kitchen sink, into this amazing sonic brew.

If you want music that’ll put hair on your chest, look no further than “Kiss It Goodbye”. This is their dirtiest recording, and by that I mean that the distortion is cranked even higher than the normal dose. Not that “100 Ways To Say I’m Sorry” is any softer or cleaner.

But there is seriously not one track on this EP that is remotely weak. Think of this as the equivalent of a double left hook to the body courtesy of Deaf or Glory. So is it trendy to sound kind of 70s, 80s or 90s? I suspect that the day Deaf or Glory gives a damn will be the day they put out a really bad recording. “Fading” requires a few listens to fully appreciate, but which becomes addictive once one gets to know it – it’s focused, concise, and flat-out efficient rock n’ roll.

All of this sound smacks of superb band production ethics too, done for the big room, and the Deaf or Glory sound is incorruptible. If you like your rock n’ roll big and thick, intelligent and complete but utterly raw with a chunky slab of retro flair, try the ‘Anger Management EP’ on for sighs!
