Myah J put it down on this one, no question. The entire album, entitled “Open Book”, bangs from start to finish. The beats are hot, her lyrics are on point and she has a great guest appearance from Yakki. Track for track, “Open Book’s” thuggette-auctioneering flow melds the perfect hybrid of Atlanta street power and sexy bedroom duchess.
Women are still relatively buried in hip-hop, confined to pop-crossover or consciousness rising, both of which translate into no credibility and no listeners respectively. I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that much of my love for this album stems from its squatting-over-your-face raunch.
In a music world where love is smeared in the anodyne gloss of, eyes on fire, hearts beating as one, and perishable forever’s, it’s refreshing to hear someone like Myah J break it down to the naked audacity of red-hot sex. And when she does it together with Yakki, on “Pull Up”, the equation is more than just an explosive orgasm.
Myah J is an empress of vixen sexuality and a dominatrix of cherry-picked decadence. “I’m Bad” will leave you daydreaming to the sound of the entire chain gang working on your thang. This is urban poetry for the hungry, horny, and bold.
A threat to male hegemony in rap and at the same time the stuff of their fantasies, Myah J album is not just very, very raunchy; it’s also about as far as you could take this kind of material.
The content is a fairly brilliant hip-hop iconoclasm: instead of the usual abhorrent misogyny that treats women purely as objects to be sexed and beaten, she is a formidable lyrical force and a woman who can use her goods to get exactly what she wants.
Dig especially on standouts like “Said I”, the single “Do What I Wanna”, or bathe inside the warmth of her melodic vocals on the groovy “Jamm Roc” ft. Yakki.
Although the album’s predominant vibe is personal – “Open Book” refers intimately to Myah J’s concepts, thoughts, frustrations and sexiness – the many club tracks break things up for an easier listening experience. In terms of production there is something for everyone – she almost taps into every urban style and movement available.
Broadening the album’s appeal and giving herself a diverse soundscape for her nimble flow. “Open Book” is a hard, brave and most exciting album from an up-and-coming female urban artist who finds sweet dripping honey in the most unlikely places. She is able to mix grime and glamour, while spitting sass all over the hottest tracks big money can buy.
Myah J has come a long way from her days of doing various photo shoots, and realizing her love for the camera, as well as appearing in a number of Men’s Magazines, such as TearSheet, Sweets, Silk, BlockDymes, FBM, and even FEDs. And once you’re able to take your eyes of her hardware, you’ll realize from her spirited rhymes and flow, just how far she’s come!
