Lacika And The Hookers: “ROTTEN HEARTS” harnesses the darker rock elements!

Born in the early 80s and writing music since he was a kid, after classical musical education Lacika Zámbó’s interests became more pop-rock orientated. Alternative artists like PJ Harvey, Bjork, Tori, Garbage and the YYYs, had a big influence on his musical style and writing. All this has led to the album “ROTTEN HEARTS”, the first studio album by Zámbó’s project Lacika And The Hookers during May this year. All songs on the album was sung, written and produced by Lacika Zámbó while the backing vocals are by Melan F. Choly.

Lacika explains the overall album themes in its cover notes stating that: “Rotten Hearts is heavy trip to my dark side…exploring territories i haven’t touched before…I was experimenting with different raw and distorted sounds in the past 2,5 years and the album contains a selection of these tracks. The songs and lyrics are very honest and coherent, they tell a story, and complete the album to full on rage rock experience.”

Encompassing elements of electronica and alternative-rock under moody melodies and killer hooks, many of the songs on “ROTTEN HEARTS” have earth-shaking sonics, crunchy guitars, varying synth sounds and banging drums. We are blessed with 9 songs filled with sounds of sarcasm mixed in a casserole of angst and melancholic vocal soundscapes.

From the moment the opening track, Is That All?, kicks off the album, you know it’s going to be an exciting, strong, straight ahead smack-in-your-face set of songs. The intensity and elements of the stunning guitar work and instrumentation in the three songs Lies , Lover and Get Rid Of Me leave no doubt that Lacika And The Hookers have proven that they can make cracking hot music!

There’s no shortage of honesty and emotion in the lyrics, either, while Lacika and backing vocalist, Melan F. Choly , does the job of singing these songs awesomely. The track Rotten Heart is slower, louder and more defiant, harnessing the darker rock elements on this album, before the album switches the tempo to an almost smoother sounding Come By Night. The ultra-low bass line lifts Never Gonna Go  into a sort of desperate atmosphere making the vocal pleas all the more ominous and poignant.

My favorite track on the album is Secret Can’t Be Told , which has a dark industrial edge while the vocals are layered with attitude and beauty. The album closes with Not Fine which forges its biting element in the repeated and whispered counter vocal and harmony tracks.

“ROTTEN HEARTS” can be considered so close to a lot of people’s hearts. This album contains tracks that really can make you quiver as they never talk about easy feelings, there’s always a dramatic vein in Lacika And The Hookers songs.  Maybe it is the darker moments of life that pass through their music – sometimes it hurts, sometimes it soothes – mostly because it makes you feel that you are not alone in this world. “ROTTEN HEARTS” is almost a much-needed relief from the waves of sweet ear-candy sounds permeating the air waves.
