The Stick Up Boys is orchestrated by a trio going by the names of Front, Brains and The Driver from Brighton, UK. They were originally formed after Front decided the world owed him something and that it was time to take it. Borrowing influences from modern dance and electronica, as well as the most notorious of the 80’s pop scene the Stick Up Boys have been heralded as the “new sound of urban pop music”. Their most recent single “Getaway” is being released by Quark Record is available to download now.
Harmonious from top to bottom and very well produced, “Getaway” is one of the best examples of how talented, non-mainstream, electronic artists can really be. You know a song is good when you stop what you’re doing to really pay attention to the awesomeness that’s coming out of the speakers. I listened to it a few times and it’s as exciting as finding 50 Quid in your coat you had forgotten about. It sounds familiar yet brand new.
The resulting saturation of electro-pop and techno-like music has become impossible to ignore, so it’s refreshing to hear music like UK group Stick Up Boys’ latest efforts. Their music is so unabashedly fun and free of postmodern irony that it’s an almost unreasonably good time. A heady blend of `80s-tinged synth pop, with whirling atmospheric electronica and frothy, carefree pop; its music that holds itself above no one, and caters to everyone. And as you can guess, it’s pretty damn catchy!

I listened to all the Stick Up Boys tracks on Soundcloud, and I can tell you that it’s rare to find a collection of songs like theirs, particularly in a genre and era where it’s practically impossible to find something that hasn’t been done before. Stick Up Boys are not trying to be revolutionary. Rather, theirs is an eclectic effort that is an excellent example of refined craftsmanship; pure electro-pop music meticulously put together for maximum enjoyment, yet one that loses nothing in immediacy or creativity. A vibrant amalgam that will no doubt prove as timeless as pop music itself, it not only makes it okay to dance, it makes it flipping righteous too!
Perhaps Stick Up Boys strongest point is their ability to take and borrow from dozens of influences, yet never come off as derivative or mere hacks, as so many of their peers have. Some of their tracks are so sinfully catchy, new wave pieces, that it sounds like they were pulled out of a time machine from 1985. It’s like the trio realized that the fine line between EDM and Pop is to be found in the primitive 80’s rhythms and soundscapes, which allows for blissfully joyful music. You can dance to this stuff with your head upside down, while you bang your eyelids on the floor. Insane!
My favorite tracks are “Getaway”, “Terminatorated”, “Trouble”, “Bling”, “Just Won’t Do It” and “Put Another Record On”. Stick Up Boys is upbeat and danceable with intriguing lyrics to their songs – the perfect synthesis that sits right between the nexus of pop, 80’s new wave and modern electronica. Give it a spin!
