FRSH Paint, aka Kevin Armstead Blackwell is a West Baltimore native, who has performed at many well-known venues including Virginia’s National Theatre, Baltimore’s Soundstage, and others. He has also opened for several superstars such as K. Michelle, Rocko, Yo Gotti, and Curren$y.
FRSH Paint’s most recent single “Choosing” ft. Mr. Maryland and produced by BigBoytraks, was released on Aug. 8th, 2016. This follows his previous major releases, which include an EP and 3 mixtapes. A highly unpredictable case of independent grinding, he is setting his sights on becoming a surefire inspiration to a world of aspiring onlookers.
FRSH Paint is in possession of a truly unique flow and deceptively deep lyricism. This new track comes with everything you expect if you already love underground music, smooth, jazzy and soulful instrumentation and an equally smooth voice layered on top. Mr. Maryland lends a sense of urgency to the track with his own personal style.
FRSH Paint is one of those vibe rappers, the type of artist who doesn’t necessarily hit you with crazy or intricate lyrics, but has an authentic sound that he sticks to, and “Choosing” ft. Mr. Maryland, is just that. Unlike many of his more popular peers, there are no attempts to create sounds just to make everything fit into the radio world or produce anything a lot less than original.
It also never feels like FRSH Paint is compromising his own style on this track – another vice many of his colleagues fall into – in an attempt to seek popularity. Instead FRSH Paint maintains the chill delivery and subject matter that contributes to this song.
All-round, “Choosing” ft. Mr. Maryland is a solid project from FRSH Paint, giving the listener exactly what they would expect from a quality recording. Production that is extremely well-executed: in this case a slick beat seamlessly overlaid with FRSH Paint’s melodic and mellow voice which provides much more than satisfactory results.
Producer BigBoytraks brings lush and detailed instrumentation to the track, utilizing a soulful rhythm, a horn section, and warm synth-pads. It’s a winning formula.
Currently in the struggle of carving out his own lane of underground success, FRSH Paint’s ambition seems to be is in his consistency, the notion that you can and should deliver a product that satisfies your core fans each time. Considering the creative potential of FRSH Paint’s work here, locked-in with his ambition, it would be justifiable to expect even bigger things from him in the near future.
