“Misery Road,” is the latest video and single from Los Angeles-based indie folk/rock band Cranky George. This is the second single from the band’s debut full-length album ‘Fat Lot of Good,’ following September’s release of the first single “Nighttime.” “Misery Road” features co-founder and actor Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, current CBS series Pure Genius) on vocals and co-founder of both Cranky George and The Pogues, James Fearnley on accordion.
Cranky George’s fresh and pure harmonies are very evident again on this single. The track also has lots of sweet accordion lines, along with a great melody, and lyrics that almost everyone can relate to. It has a very traditional feel to it, but at the same time, is breezy and refreshing.
“Misery Road” is an upbeat and catchy song which is just waiting in line to become a hit single. Even though it’s mid-tempo to upbeat, it still has a very laid-back and comfortable acoustic-driven feel. It’s a simple song, but perfectly executed.
“Misery Road” is filled with impressive and widely diverse tones and timbres. It’s clear that Cranky George refuses to fit into the same mold of most other pop-country groups, as their music is versatile, roots based and sounds much different than anything else on the radio.
Listening to this track will take you on a musical roller coaster filled with melody and harmony. The lyrics, sung by Dermot Mulroney, center around “a love affair gone wrong and a man leaving town to find answers” while the music video continues to explore this theme.
Overall, “Misery Road” is a refreshing track, loaded with impressively polished harmony. It seems clear that Cranky George is here to stay, and not just a band put together on some whim — I think their momentum will only keep on growing, and this will likely become an incredibly popular band once everyone starts to take note of their arrival.
It’s not often that a band releases two singles in a row where each song sounds like an impressive winning formula. You get your money’s worth with the Cranky George. All talented musicians, and superb songwriting. And don’t be fooled into thinking that the actor-singer thing is a sort of gimmick to draw attention.
Yes, it’s true that Dermot Mulroney will grab your attention because of his acting accolades, but he’ll hold it here because of his singing and performing qualities. This band is a breath of fresh Country air in a world of bubble gum pop music. I reckon these guys must also be a blast to see live.
