Sinai Variant is an electronic / dance music band, based in Leeds, UK. They have released two tracks, “January” and “April” , available on iTunes and other digital stores and some audio videos on YouTube. Electronic has acquired a stereotype of repetition and lack of creativity. This assumption usually comes from those who hear the radio and/or MTV versions of most of the songs and the artists. This is their problem and their loss alike.
While any intelligent person will admit that sometimes you just don’t like a genre of music, when a non-fan of electronic music is asked for a reason, the most common response runs along the lines of “it’s too boring”. At the other end of the spectrum, one occasionally hears complaints that “it’s too loud and harsh”. In “January” and “April”, Sinai Variant takes a rather interesting approach. Instead of aiming for one side or the other, they attempt to combine the hypnotic qualities of dance with the more aggressive qualities of electro. For the most part, they succeed. I could take the time to describe individual tracks, but it will suffice to say that the effect is accomplished through combining thumping beats with airy keyboards.
Usually when an electronica group tries to put more depth and creativity into their music, it just isn’t very fun to dance too. But Sinai Variant is special because they really hit the nail on the head here. Their tracks make you move and keep the blood flowing as well. They know how to make big beat music.
“January” and “April” is pure energy, club symphony coming at you hard and unyielding every second of the way. Sure, the song styles and sounds isn’t as complex as some of the more recent electronic releases that have come out, but what to you expect from tracks that were originally released in 2012. We all know what electronics are like: You purchase the latest hot off the shelf gizmo, and by the time you get home and unpack it, a brand new model has already made its way into the stores. Electronic music behaves in much the same way – sounds and production techniques evolve with the speed of light, making what came before it sound quickly outdated.
Sinai Variant manage to stay relevant in that the music is engaging and complex enough to hold your attention, while still maintaining the upbeat rhythms and otherworldly sounds that they capture. Sure there is some nostalgia in there but the music still sounds great. Every synth tone just shakes you to the core.
