San Diego-born femcee, Velarde who is now repping Dallas, Texas, has just dropped the title track single off her upcoming EP. Riding high on the tail of her previous successful release “Light it up” – featuring JayArson and produced by Six Beatz – “HighSky” drips with smooth liquid soul. You’ll find Velarde doesn’t miss a beat, spitting her slow burning rhymes as Six Beatz once again paints a deep, sinuous beat for her to beautifully cling onto.
Velarde always makes everything she does seem effortless and fun while still owning her space. In fact she is acutely aware of how to market herself, how to juggle numerous styles and how to almost casually do things people will still be trying to catch up to years from now.
The things that I have heard her do so far are straight fire. I’m really glad she shows the want to become a presence in the rap forefront. She is vital and so many people could learn a thing or two from her, regardless of gender.

Over the last decade, women in Hip-Hop haven’t been half as popular as they were in its heyday. Think back to the years between 1995-2005: Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Eve, Foxy Brown, Trina, and more, all had simultaneous, successful runs – only Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj have seen similar mainstream success as their fellow femcee peers.
The release of the new Velarde single means more future music from her is to follow, in the form of an EP, which in turns means she’ll be working her way closer towards that mainstream radar.
