San Doctor: “Pop rap is 4 everyone” – thinkable, memorable and touching music!

Hip hop artist San Doctor, from Mexico near the Texan border, the style is a mixture of pop music and southern hip hop. The lyrics themselves paint a picture of a post-modernist Mexico; a critique of hypergamous relationships, political correctness and the message of contemporary hip hop music. Life most certainly consists of learning and ultimately applying that vested knowledge.

It’s not an understatement that we must gain and apply knowledge every day for the rest of our lives. Although simple in practice, it is not the ability to obtain knowledge but instead, our ability to truly understand the meaning at its core. And that is what rapper San Doctor continuously tries to do through his music and on his EP – “Pop rap is 4 everyone”.

I never heard of San Doctor until this release. So, I was sitting here doing my thing on the computer and listening to “Pop rap is 4 everyone” in the background. It was really good. And it was pretty compelling, as I was distracted from the other things I was doing right off. This is a test I usually do to see if the music really is interesting enough to merit a listener’s attention.

This one did. For the most part due to San Doctor’s angst-ridden flow and complex rhyme scheme. The other reason being the electronic production, which showed off peculiar beat styles not usually heard on most other releases. You’ll realize there is a lot to explore on this EP.

You just won’t find music like “Pop rap is 4 everyone” lying around in a ‘Best Buy’ bargain bin. This forms part of those uncovered gems that you need to track down and discover. San Doctor creates 5 indelible offerings on here, and there are few artists in his genre who come close to this level of eclecticism.

To call him a simple rapper almost feels like a disservice; the lengths he went to deliver this EP, in collaboration with producers Fineck One, Itrez and Invisible Sound, make me think of him more as a songwriter too. At the risk of sounding sappy, he honestly has a great gift for making thinkable, memorable, and touching music.

The kaleidoscope of moods and feelings present on this recording is an absolute experience. ‘Wake Up’ is up-beat and pumping. ‘Mandingo’ is a nastily twisted banger. ‘Real Beaner’ (my favorite track) is lilting and haunting anthem. The hand-clapping ‘Godinez’ grows and fades at a rhythmic pace both compelling and uncertain.

While ‘No more’ ft. Fineck One, is a slow burning, introspective lament. But that’s just summing it up briefly to save pages of space. There really is a lot more going on…and it’s dark and deep!

San Doctor tastefully melds the staples of electronica, glitch, trap and hip hop, and none of it gratuitously done. On top of this musical activity his lyrics are all but lighthearted. You’ll have to listen closely to catch every nuances and meaning, but it’s nothing a couple of replays won’t solve.

If like me, you’re new to San Doctor, immerse yourself in this Ep, it’s all good. If you’re already familiar with this artist, then you already know what to do!
