Robin B. Czar came arrived in 2007 with his album Nachtgesänge (German for “Nocturnal Chants”), gaining notoriety for his bizarre positivity. With a career spanning diverse years and countless gigs, and now his 3rd studio album, Robin is a rock artist that has evolved in maturity without having lost his signature sound. Mission Bizarre continues down the path that 2014’s Kiss From the Abyss started on, both in production style and theme. 18 Months in the making, Robin says of Mission Bizarre: “There are times in any artist’s career that somehow all things mesh together. His experiences, influences, and personal timing bring him into a bizarre space. This has happened with this record. 18 months in the making have provided direction, but even greater reflection.”
On “Mission Bizarre”, which will be officially released on the 2nd of October 2015, Robin B. Czar keeps up his seemingly consistent theme of dark philosophical poetry-based lyrics. Shockingly strong lyrical imagery of death, madness, violence and even sex abound throughout the 10 tracks that make up the new album – Captivated/No escaping/Hell unlocks it gates/Non-sedated/You are gaping/Your descent to hell awaits…” – and that’s just the beginning of your journey with the diabolical mind of Robin B. Czar! But don’t be fooled, underneath the ‘scary’ lyrics lies potent messages and lessons to be learned.
No doubt “Mission Bizarre” is a revolutionary work by an undeniably bizarre and talented artist. Robin B. Czar lyrics are not only provocative and fascinating on an intellectual level, but rather something more innate and unexplainable. Either you listen to his music, and connect with it on a deeper level than just the sonic or lyrical quality, or you don’t. That connection may not happen all at once, but give this German-born UK resident a little time, and you may just find his music burrowing itself into your inner psyche, and building itself a home!
To make matters more intriguing, Robin B. Czar’s brazenly profound lyrics are wrapped in powerful chords and melodies. The music, the lyrics, the mashing of beauty, rage and intensity, make it really hard to fully describe “Mission Bizarre”. If just like to turn music on and let it fill the background as you work or whatever, then find something else. Robin B. Czar will jar you, stop you in your tracks and make you think…and then when you finish the song, you’ll back it up and play it again. This happened to me on numerous tracks; such as the song about a death watch, “Requiem”, or “She Loved Too Much”, a song about a girl who confessed to Robin that she would have liked to have eaten the tongue and eyes of a particular guy she had a crush on!
Robin B. Czar consistently produces music that is interesting and thought provoking on this album. “Dr.Dog” tells the tale of an ambitious dog who adored human beings, but that’s only the beginning of the story. The morals contained within this song run astoundingly deep, as do most of Robin’s songs. You could pick any one track, from “Grief” to the “Kiss of Death”, and “Only That One Wish” to “Until We Meet Again”, each one of these songs has a complex and sagacious theme. Quite simply Robin B. Czar writes songs that make you think!
Luckily Robin comes to our aide with a full house of notes and lyrics to help us understand where each song is coming from lyrically. But this album is not just about the lyrics. Musically Robin is on target. He plays all the instruments, does the vocals and the programming too. The album’s originality and creative, aggressive Goth-Rock sound, with brilliant screaming guitars and peaceful keyboard interludes, dumbfounded me. Robin B. Czar is very outside the box, and sometimes it takes a couple listens to get use to the songs. But once you start to pick up on them, you’ll fall in love and will want to have more!
