Few songs are coming out these days that can simultaneously balance a sense of diversity and creativity beside a cohesive catchiness and depth of lyrics. “Friends are Forever” by Kercules tells a story…his story – “I’ve been going through a mid-life crisis lately, not knowing who I am, not knowing what my purpose is,” explains Kercules. “Feeling cast out and rejected, feeling like a failure in life and to my family. This song is a product of that experience and my response to it, putting the past behind me, and learning from my failures. Trying to shed the mask, and be myself again.”
Infused with the kind of vibrancy and color more often reserved for a confessionary dream sequence, Kercules spills into the music scene, with a bouncy EDM-Pop and alternative indie-infused track, well suited for the dance-floor, but just as interesting through a set of headphones.
His lyrics are intimate and revealing, bringing together artist and consumer into a shared experience of empowering self-discovery. Through his lyrics Kercules comes across as a crusader for self-love and self-acceptance.
Sonically, “Friends are Forever” remains largely upbeat, with a soaring melody, blissful synths and plenty of handclapping. There’s a determined sense of defiance that weaves itself throughout the track, which has a general lack of begging and apologizing, but rather an exploration of self-awareness and accomplishment.
Despite the song’s lyrical theme no one could ever accuse Kercules of being morose. Even within the most somber verses he’s written there is a strong tinge of positivity to them. I’m not sure today’s music is as reliably catchy as it was.
In fact it’s easy to think the songwriting ground has been well and truly raked over – but then along comes Kercules who has such an individualistic talent for writing a great crossover EDM Pop tune with an upbeat feel, dark ambiguous lyrics and a sharp production. If you’re searching for something hummable, singable and danceable…or even the opposite, Kercules covers all the bases.
“Friends are Forever” is busy, brash and bouncy, as Kercules whips up melancholy and joy into a full-bodied concoction, and though it could lyrically qualify for a soundtrack to someone’s life unsettling experiences it is strangely uplifting.
Mostly due to Kercules’ energetic vocal delivery and a soundscape that bristles with urgency. “Friends are Forever” is just an amazingly clever song – lyrical depth meets with fun dance music – a combination that makes for a single which will be ringing in yours ears for a long time.
