It’s is easy to see the emotionally-stained airy-voiced Soul and R&B singer Jaymarlé in the lineage of female artists whose music hinged on the paradoxical power of vocals that felt like a blend between a growl and a whisper. There are those that fall more or less in one end of that spectrum like Sade, who achieved idol status for the icy sensuality of her music, and there is Brandy, whose voice is much richer, or someone like Ciara and, of course, there is Aaliyah, revered like a goddess thanks to the crushing emotionalism of a voice that put her far out of step with the divas of the 90s.
On the other side of the spectrum there are songstresses like Macy Gray, Duffy and Amy Whitehouse, among others. Slap-bang in the middle, we find the upcoming talent of Jaymarlé. If you lie in bed alone at night in a pitch black room with only the sound of an earplug and an iPhone, Jaymarlé’s voice is the one that might feel the most appropriate.
Anchoring the song “So High” ft. LoneStar produced by The Beat Arkitekz are Jaymarlé’s advancing command of her instrument and a more nonchalant approach to melody. Her voice skips and flits across chilled composition with a confidence that defies the limits of emotion.
She has zeroed in on her strengths as a performer and tailored “So High” specifically around them. Rapper LoneStar steps in to drop a few bars which add a more urban slant to the proceedings. The song surges with a lush, sensual gravitas, distinctly Soul and R&B but never confined to genre conventions.
Jaymarlé’s almost freestyle lyrical composition is a nice change of pace from other RnB female vocalists, and is completely unique in its own sense. The true goldmine in her music, though, besides her voice is the content of what she communicates and the atmosphere the music creates.
As human beings, we are conditioned to use music as an escape, an outlet, and a coping mechanism, and as such “So High” ft. LoneStar is the equivalent of sipping on a cup of passionflower. Jaymarlé’s vocal conviction is blended with coy, soothing intimacy, while her sensual singing works because of its lyrical directness.
With the release of this track Jaymarlé has clearly set a huge precedent for doing it her way, and showing audiences that her product is not the product of anyone else.
