J-Fly is an up and coming hip-hop artist from Manhattan, KS, who became inspired to write his own lyrics after growing up on rap music played by his older siblings. It was in high school where he gained a buzz from rapping in front of fellow classmates that he realized this was something he wanted to pursue.
In 2015 he caught the attention of AR6TEEN Entertainment, an independent record label. He was offered an opportunity with the label and made his debut in AR Vazquez’s “48 Bars” music video. With the success of his first single “Straight Wreckin”, and the security of a supportive label by his side now, J-Fly is ready to take it to the next level.
And part of that ‘next level’ plan is the single “That Could Be Us”. J-Fly has refined and reconfigured his sound, placing more and more emphasis on his rapping while coming to favor sleeker, more dramatic production. It’s a journey now reaching its peak on this track.
It’s undeniably the product of a strong will, delivered without any guests. Introspection and honesty seem to be central to his artistry, and “That Could Be Us” keeps present reality at the forefront with a particular focus on the rapper’s growing grind towards fame and how he handles it.
J-Fly’s description of his personal thoughts makes it easy for him to be understood. Plenty of artists would prefer to keep the absolute privacy of that situation out of their music, but J-Fly isn’t one to shy away from the excruciating details of his personal lows and relationships.
That openness about his actions fills this track with darkly fascinating texture. Its evidence of J-Fly’s songwriting range and consistency that “That Could Be Us” holds together no matter how many stories he tells or how many ways he tells them. Love and sex inspire a deep range of feelings in J-Fly’s music.
“That Could Be Us” is a showcase of versatility that plays to its creator’s strengths enough to feel like a definitive statement, no matter how many other projects he’s released before it. J-Fly stands out amongst his peers through his ability to write fully realized songs, versus the normalized attempts to ride waves any production presents.
This single also happens to be the most-balanced J-Fly project to date, showcasing a perfect balance between his pummeling verses and his caressing flow.
