One half (Kai) of the twin-powered rap group DosK, has launched his solo project under the moniker IYE. His debut release, is the single “Wit Da Fist”. A rapper with his track record and pedigree could have phoned in this record, content to rest on his reputation. Instead, the single is unremittingly intense from the cover image to the sharpened production. In a way, “Wit Da Fist” plays out like a classic gangster-movie script, as IYE seeks to flesh out the fakers, the losers and the liars – “Creeping niggas lurking from the side whoa. Execute the pull up when we ride slow. You ain’t bout that life so don’t pretend now. If they get involved we bring your friends down. Don’t’ tell me you got heart if you can’t measure that. Niggas treating pussy like a treasure map. Fucking with the gang that’s fully equipped. Automatic knockout with the fist.”
IYE jumps in with vigor, and absolutely raps his ass off, laying waste to the pretenders and even manages to have some fun. For the most part, though, it’s all business as he gets down to telling his street tale. One thing I can say is that it’s definitely a different side of Kai as he appears in DosK.
The track conveys a more mature and streetwise version of the rapper and I can personally appreciate the attempt to be different on this release. Otherwise there would be no point in doing a solo stint if you’re going to be repeating yourself!
It would be reasonable for us to expect IYE’s music to be that of a growing man with a sharper perspective on life. And if you read between the lines, that’s exactly what you’re getting here. Listen up: “I never heard of you nigga. How you acting tough on the internet? All I see are these losses, please show me where the winning at? Oh, right, that’s a mirror, 20/20 vision clearer.” See what I mean?
It is this ability to be painstakingly introspective while dropping harsh lines like “Veins cold got ice in it. How your heart pump with a knife in it,” that makes “Wit Da Fist” a must listen and only raises the expectations for any upcoming solo releases from IYE.
The track showcases the rapper’s smooth flow as he remains in good kilter and stays on topic throughout, and at the same time his personality comes shining through too. Another thing that comes to the fore is that IYE is very capable of switching lanes in style and lyrical content without losing any credibility in the process.
