Twins Jakay and Jakai Wilson, better known as DosK are getting ready to drop their brand new EP, “Channel Yourself” on the 20th November. The boys are kicking things off with a release party to be held at the Factory Underground, Norwalk, CT 8-11pm on the 19th November. From radio-friendly bangers to introspective musings, DosK’s latest EP, is arguably the best thing they’ve done this far. The recording encapsulates the mindset of individuals, who are taking change in their stride while not forgetting where they come from.
Whether it’s the hard hitting anthem “101” which opens this record or the banging lead single, “Love It”, the EP’s complex production and strong imagery found in its verses is a departure from their previous work as 2kBoys.
This is especially evident on the more confessional tracks like “Mood Now” and the quaint sing-song filled “Fuck It Up”. Hip-hop fans and music critics alike will undoubtedly acknowledge that DosK are on top of their craft here.
“Channel Yourself” is an instructional for those who aren’t familiar with DosK’s work and style. While this new angle is the one that the Stamford natives are going for with the hope that they will become a household name.
It’s difficult not to nod your head to tracks like “Run It” and “Swerve” where they unload and spit lines like “Better stay away from me, I got girlies I don’t know, want to spend a day with me.” One of the best tracks on the EP is “Finally Free”.
The vocals are sultry and captivating, and the pounding percussion is hauntingly perfect as the line goes: “I could show you things that you ain’t never seen. I could call you names that you wanna be. I’m finally free.” The production almost steals the show and overall presents a defining track on the EP, truly epitomizing what I expected to hear on this recording.
After all of the great underground rap albums of 2016, DosK slides this EP in at the end of the year without the fear of being overshadowed by their rap peers – giving us something to bump on our drive back home for the upcoming Christmas break.
Jakay and Jakai prove they are hard workers with this EP as their sound has become far more mature and smarter. If you’re looking for songs with overused beats and shallow lyrics, then a track like “Hell You” is not for you.
Any hip hop fan that can appreciate thought out lyrics blended with music that help to amplify the words, will not want to skip out on this one. Met with beautiful choruses, all of these songs do a great job of digging below your skin and making you feel what DosK are feeling. “Channel Yourself” is not just reminiscing about the past, but proving themselves to anybody who’s ever doubted them.
