New Orleans is a recording artist, lyricist, producer, and entrepreneur Damond Young whose recording career officially began at age 13, when he was inspired by family members beatboxing and beating on tables in the tradition admired by hip hoppers worldwide. Damon has recently dropped the “Ahead Of Time Nation” LP.
One of the LP’s main attractions is “Sugar” an understated mid-tempo jam with a percolating beat, sinuous synth lines, and vocals stretched and pulled into sweetness. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but what will make it get stuck in your head, is that the vibe of the song is delivered in a rustic voice as only Jeannee Aenise can, and which some of her contemporaries cannot achieve.
Damond steps into the party and melts perfectly into the song with a deep down-tuned vocal style. You can almost never fault Damond Young for the delivery of his rhymes, and he pulls off the same tricks in this song. At times, Damond Young can be an impressive rapper, and on “Sugar” he leaps off opening lines and knocks the verse out the goddamn park.
“New Orleans (ft.Andres’)” is the kind of raw, hot, and capricious sound that you can replay over and over again. The song reminds you of the fluid motions of a lava lamp, casually changing from laid back to intense vocals, thanks to the multi-timbral voices.
We all know with pop music, there is a fine line between creating a track that is really catchy and one that is simply annoying. “Desire” is one that fits in the first category fortunately. The positives in the song are the fact that the track offers a rather understated mid tempo but bubbly beat, creating a very groovy slow-burning sounding vibe with a clear pop inspiration throughout.
“On Site” is a track that will be what most fans were expecting from an artist like Damond Young, the six minutes and thirty five seconds of pure fire will surely make it a success among underground fans. Of course, there are many standouts. How couldn’t there be, with a quality artist such as Damond.
The “Ahead Of Time Nation” LP is made up of 7 polyrhythmic and eclectically curated tracks. The LP stands in stark contrast to the aggressively braggadocio nature of many recent releases and reveals another layer of Damond we’ve yet to see.
Those who came to know and love Damond Young through his previous releases are in for more, easy, infectious hooks, clever lyrics and very smart production. The project is particularly impactful, and it contains easy wins for the streets and the club. It will obviously help to further define Damond Young and soon push him into the spotlight!
