10 Waves of You is an Italian Ambient Post Rock one-man band from Milan (Italy), formed in 2014 by Luca Crivellaro. The project’s debut album “Fields of Venus” released in March of 2015. “Sail”, the four-track EP to be released on the 18th of March 2016, is the culmination of 6 months’ worth of studio work. Whoever can’t seem to get enough of all these post-rock/instrumental bands do yourself a favor and pick up this EP. 10 Waves of You seem to be at the forefront of the genre, perfecting that whole soft to loud thing that we all love Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai for, although the “heavy” parts here are a little less heavy and a bit more rhythmical.
This album is simply awesome in and by design. It combines post rock with delicate atmospheric elements that create a broader sound than many other post rock bands that I have heard thus far. Luca has created his own unique blend of sound that illuminates the air. This type of music isn’t for everyone, granted everyone sails their own ship, but if ever there were a ship to be sailed along a Crestline sea that goes from blue to green, then “Sail” is the EP you would be playing.
Nearly every track is a slow burn, either building a melody to a chilling crescendo or just letting it linger, and there is great artistry and subtle beauty in the textures 10 Waves of You weave. Many post-rock aficionados attempt to confine the genre by creating over-specified criteria and remaining staunch in opinion – however, there are no defining attributes to the perfect post-rock band. Some artists are atmospheric and focus on noise and ambience, while others are more in-your-face and focus on hard rock. Some are minimalistic while others are busy and technical. There is no right or wrong – it’s all subject to personal opinion.
10 Waves of You has the gift of delivering a combination of all the above qualities, which can specifically found in the two best tracks, “SunBurst” and “Round Window”. In particular, “Round Window”, is one of the most addicting, beautiful, gorgeous, and powerful songs on the EP. The build-up is done perfectly with truly fantastic chord progression until it drops down yet again and builds up rather quickly; eventually turning into something absolutely beautiful…This is definitely my favorite track on the album…along with “SunBurst”!
This EP has power and intensity with an added dose of peace and introspection that you only dream of other post rock bands achieving, all in one package. And this can be found in the opening title track, “Sail”. The only track here, arranged and played sans guitar – imagine the gentleness and beauty of Sigur Ros. It is lyrical and poetic without uttering a word. The slow build and movement-like interludes of this EP are worth a good set of speakers or earphones, but also of your time.
Taking time to enjoy “Sail” is perhaps one of the best ways to listen to it. The entire EP has a good, warm feel too, very analogue-esque, and produced just-enough. Over-production is a sin 10 Waves of You is far from committing, but don’t think for a moment that means the EP is under-thought or sloppy, because it’s neither of those things. It’s very well thought out, and executed, plus 10 Waves of You does a masterful job of drawing upon emotions in the listener. In short, if you like ambient music, emotional music, Post-Rock, cinematic music, then this project and this album are more than worth checking out – they are essential to your collection!
