Hip Hop is and has been in a state of decline for many years now. It seems that emcees all want to sound the same and spit about the exactly the same things. Strong hip hop communities had Biggie, Wu Tang, Jigga, Nasty Nas who were all representing NY and Cali had their own thing going on. Rap was at its peak, flows were dirty and production was grimey and street. What we have now is an industry obsessed by money and being a celebrity. Emcees who once had potential are saying nothing new so we need fresh talent like Valentina, who can bring on the bars.
Valentina seems to be one of the saviors, in this optic. I have heard so many rappers who blend into one: nothing outstanding about their flow, just average, as they rely on the beat and the vocal hook to engage audiences. Valentina is a female emcee from Birmingham, England.
Her style, flow, voice, rhymes just have that special something. Never has a non US rapper made it big here but I think if people were to hear her track, “96 Bars of Reality”, Valentina would have a very good chance. She spits fire with her personal take on life over a minimal beat and doesn’t get tempted by rapping like a punk.
With the track, style an accent being British, it might not sound like our typical gangsta hip hop, but once you get your head round it you will know it is dope. I know it’s unlike anything you’ve ever heard and for that reason it will probably take a while to catch on with mainstream American audiences – which is too bad.
The fact that Valentina raps with a Brit accent isn’t actually an obstacle. It’s actually part of her amazing appeal. However, accent or not, this lady can rap with the best of them. As far as the beat goes, it sounds like it was made in a basement somewhere – very minimum yet very infectious.
The beauty of Valentina’s sound is vocal. She simply and basically delivers rhymes which are perfectly patterned and provide a completely poetic delivery. She is at the helm of a new genre which will only be growing. Britain is younger and fresher and set to provide many more artists, such as Valentina to hip hop.
Whether the USA appreciates it or is too caught up in its own overblown produce to receive such ground-breaking and contemporary artists is only a fault of our own. Those with an open mind, who are not afraid of expanding their horizons, should definitely check this lady out.
