Chozen is singer-songwriter and rapper from the Atlanta area that’s attempting to take the music scene by storm. He has a sound that incorporates melodic flows and catchy hooks. Chozen has been writing music since the age of 9 and plans on bringing a vulnerable, open and honest approach to his music that really connects with listeners. He has had the opportunity to perform all over the southeast and has now released his 17-track mixtape entitled “Love, Dreams & Let Downs”.
Chozen incorporates hip hop as well as R&B and pop in this mixtape. His songs vary in emotions and subjects from love to money to making it in the industry. I particularly like the creative writing, the transitions between singing and rapping, and the all-round variety presented here. Chozen really did a great job with this project. He shows a lot of himself, without any collaborations or features, which is an anomaly in the game right now, where guest appearances are the trend.
Chozen makes music not only targeted for the hip hop community, he targets international crossover audiences. You’ll find him full-on rapping in tracks like “Go Hard”, “Grew Up Fast” and “The Cure”, or enjoy his sing-song rap style in songs like “Turnt”. On tracks like “Regret”, “Save The Day”, “Take Me Away” and “What’s Love”, you’ll appreciate Chozen extending his soulful vocal chords across each track. Quite frankly this is Chozen’s artistic guise, I personally enjoy most.
Though he performs ably in both, I feel Chozen is a much better singer than a rapper, and probably an even better songwriter. He has a hypnotic voice, and while the merging of his rapping and singing is great, it’s his singing voice that ultimately draws you in. Two tracks in particular come to my here; “What’s Love” and “Void”. All-round though, his tracks have great melodic hooks and catchy phrases that will easily stick in the R&B, Pop and EDM idioms, over and above the hip hop genre. With his indefinable creativity and uniqueness Chozen deserves to be mainstream.
“Love, Dreams & Let Downs” exceeded my expectations. Chozen’s lyricism and passion give each song a unique life of its own. I am positively moved by how he shares his thoughts; I can sense that he put a lot into this work, disposing a great range of tempo and flavor on this mixtape.
Chozen has matched unique beats and rhythms with his rap style and singing. He is not afraid to go to the boundaries in his music creativity, and that drive, shines through and will keep you listening.
