Typhoid Rosie: “Hearts Bleed Goodbye” leaves a lasting impression

Typhoid Rosie is formed by comedienne-turned-singer-songwriter Rosie Rebel and her drumming husband, Phil Wartell. For most of their relationship, Rosie made comedy and Phil made music. It wasn’t until 2011 that Rosie stumbled upon a hidden song-writing talent while taking a mandatory music class at Columbia University.

In that same year, she formed Typhoid Rosie, graduated from Columbia with honors, and married Phil. In 2012, the two produced their first album. During March of this year, Typhoid Rosie released their latest album, entitled “Hearts Bleed Goodbye”. The current live line up of the band consists of Rosie Rebel on vocals, Matt Kursmark on guitar, Phil Wartell on drums, Leah Farmer on keyboards, Chris Potter on guitar, and Steve Capecci on bass.

typhoid-rosie-350When one looks back at the alternative rock scene that dominated the first half of the 90s, and the rubbish happening on that very same scene now, it becomes clear that Typhoid Rosie’s album definitely deserves to belong to a better musical era than this one.

“Hearts Bleed Goodbye” has many elements in its sound which can explain its broad appeal. The songs are so incredibly infectious and danceable, as well as being highly intelligent, emotional and profound in its lyrical content. It would appeal to most pop music lovers, but “Hearts Bleed Goodbye” is undeniably a rock album, first and foremost.

With crunching guitars, intense drumming, and a charismatic frontwoman, a more rock inclined audience is sure to truly dig into this testament of loss and personal grieving handled with unbelievable candor. Typhoid Rosie’s music is like an updated and intensified version of Blondie and Garbage.

Another reason Typhoid Rosie will strike such a chord with the general public is there really isn’t another band quite like them.  While their themes fit the disparaging alternative rock scene, the musicians that make up this band know how to craft songs meticulously and methodically.

Typhoid Rosie also happen to be great songwriters’ to boot. Yet as we know in rock n’ roll, its one thing to have great songs, musicians and producers, but the perfect singer is needed to put a face on the music and the image. And while the songs on “Hearts Bleed Goodbye” are excellent, no doubt, it is Rosie Rebel, who more than any other really makes them shine.

Truly a gifted singer, she can change from sounding sensitive to sad, seductive to forlorn, passionate to passive, all in a single breath. While her beautiful voice can enchant, her self-confidence, integrity, and self-empowerment no doubt will strike a chord with any audience, considering the emotional condition she was going through while creating this music.

Also being extremely attractive, does help, but Rosie never needs to flaunt it, as her talent alone carries the songs to exactly where they need to be.

Typhoid Rosie’s unique brand of alt-rock is demonstrated immediately with the opening title track. And each subsequent song is equally mesmerizing, leaving a lasting impression. The album’s standouts are many, and leaving out any track would almost be unfair on what has been globally achieved here.

But the songs which melodically endeared my ear, over and above the lyrical content were, “On The Day”, “Better To Know Now”, “Won’t Last Forever”, “Baby I Want You”, “Walk Of Shame”, “Oopsie Daisy” and “Till We Meet Again”.

I can’t help but feeling that if a few of the aforementioned songs were released during the early nineties, they would have made a lasting impression on fans and international charts alike. In this current fickle industry made up of Autotune, Protools and Laptops, the battle to maintain and divulge real, emotional music that matters, is an arduous one.

It takes lots of sacrifice, a brave heart and a strong desire to communicate, to be able to carry forward an impeccable project like Typhoid Rosie in today’s music scene. Without a doubt singer-songwriter Rosie Rebel and her drumming husband, Phil Wartell have what it takes, and it shows in every instant on “Hearts Bleed Goodbye”.
