Sun God Seven was conceived in the summer of 2012 between Sun God and Glenn 7. These two artists go back 25 years, having cut their teeth in the same music scene in New Orleans. Sun God moved away from New Orleans to pursue his career in an all original rock act in Houston, Tx – Downtown Bruno, which garnered a huge fan base in The Houston area and attracted the attention of Pace Concerts which has gone on to become the epicenter of what is known today as Live Nation.
Steve Lawler and Matt Schulte were able to garnish some great opening shows for Downtown Bruno. Sun God played guitar and sang backup vocals in the band that had opening slots for Kiss, Pantera, Black Crowes, Circus of Power, Rick Derringer, Cinderella and many more. Here we are 20 years later and Sun God Seven is following the same format. Sun God Seven was fortunate enough to be the last act to work with famed producer Andy Johns who worked with Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Free, Humble Pie, Van Halen, Godsmack and a host of other great talent. Andy sadly passed leaving Sun God Seven to be the last band he worked with. The future holds a great timeline for this New Orleans rock act.
We ran through some songs on Sun God Seven’s catalog and were blown away. Sure, there are heavier bands out there, but SGS, really kicks it hard. I think most should be able to appreciate the underlying angst and heavy guitar rhythms, as well as the passion and strain that can be detected in singer Sun God’s voice as he croons throughout.
Songs such as Kiss Your Man, Wine Fun, This Is My Rifle, Love Love Love, and the catchy Spend Another Day help to define current rock n roll as well as set the tone for upcoming younger rock acts. Call them unoriginal or call them whatever you want, but Sun God Seven’s always have a new style or a new variation on a classic old rock style that keeps you guessing.
Sun God Seven’s music will be especially revered by those who like the heavy grunge sound of the early 90’s, mixed with modern alternative rock and blues influences. Brimming with energy, inspiration, and pathos, their songs have a unifying feel to it, each standing out on their own as utterly listenable and enjoyable.
Sun God Seven has plenty of hooks, as well as some masterful lyrics within their songs. Plus to back up their audio material, the band produces high impact videos which provoke guaranteed emotion, song after song. It’s almost impossible to overlook this band’s talent and authenticity. Similar to groups before them, like Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden, they also continue to help change the perception that kickass rock music can’t be artful.
There’s just a ton of performing, songwriting skills and sounds in their music that really sets Sun God Seven apart from everything else that is currently being released right now. As can be gathered by whom the band has worked with in the past, it is clear that they are more concerned with tight song structures and overall quality of their tracks, than just rocking out. Sun God Seven’s sound is crafted with creative melodies, irresistible guitar riffs, and great production quality.
