Splash The Blackwolf: “Julius Erving” uses his diverse arsenal of ideas, emotions and tools

Splash The Blackwolf has the typical heartbreak and suffering life story that accompanies a wave of rappers. Splash was born in Atlanta Georgia and moved to Charleston South Carolina around 2 years old. He lived with his grandmother and then moved to Savannah Georgia, for college when he was 18, but after getting into some trouble he moved to Atlanta around 20. Splash lived with some family members but eventually ended up homeless until he fixed himself up and moved into an apartment with his brothers.

He didn’t take music seriously until his best friend and fellow rapper Wappo G, from Riverdale GA, died from a gunshot wound to the head on thanksgiving day in 2015 , which was sadly followed by his mother being diagnosed with breast cancer the following year.

A few months back Splash The Blackwolf dropped the single “Julius Erving” produced by @Mastemindonthetrack. Throughout this track Splash shows the versatility that most major label artists are striving for. He mixes his energetic rapping with a sense of vulnerability yet playfulness, and uses a plethora of tools to combine and weave his emotions together into this track.

Another great thing is that you don’t have to go and Google Splash’s lyrics as there is no garbled rapping or singing – this is a plus point. His focus isn’t on spitting out rhymes as fast as possible, but it’s translating his ideas and emotions across. We like that.

This heart-on-his-sleeve directness is a large part of Splash The Blackwolf’s draw. He’s the kind of rapper who sounds like he’s always on the verge of an emotional shakedown, rapping his ass off in an attempt to at least delay if not prevent one.

Splash is at his best when infusing specific names, images and situations that make his tales one of a kind, and he couldn’t ask for a better vehicle than the nametag of “Julius Erving” from where he can pluck a complete set of freshly picked metaphors.

And Splash uses his diverse arsenal of ideas, emotions and tools almost all equally well. The production is also consistent, as the track manages to flow with a cohesive trap sound booming under the hood.

For better or worse, the best way for an artist to directly connect with their fan-base is to make music that is a true representation of their character and lifestyle. I’m not sure if Splash The Blackwolf is doing just that, as I don’t know his musical history well enough.

But the I think that this single brings validity to the image Splash portrays here as an underrated influencer within the genre – qualities that make him a rare breed amongst many rappers who misrepresent their lifestyles.
