Sham Idrees moved with his family to London, England at a young age. From there he traveled to Canada a little over a decade ago, finally settling down in the heart of Hamilton, Ontario at 16.
As a former grad of Orchard Park Secondary School in Stoney Creek, and a proud holder of a Bachelors of Commerce degree from the University of Ontario, Sham always had high hopes and dreams. Having worked for various organizations and companies he eventually decided to start his own business and became an entrepreneur.
“It was the difficult situations in life. The mistakes, regrets, the good and the bad, that became the drive and heart for my songs”, says Sham Idrees, as he describes his passion and love for not only music but life itself.
His determination for living life to the fullest was renewed as his life flashed before him in a serious car accident in January of 2011.
Moving to Ottawa soon after, he says his love of music and the specific emphasis on bitter, sad-songs during this tragic time, lead him to want to write more. Starting off as a hobby, his passion slowly became reality and “You are the Fool” was written. Since then, he has written various other songs that are scheduled to be released sometime in the future.
Sham takes his work very seriously but says that its also all about having fun with it too. “Music at the end of the day is entertainment, and entertainment can only be truly enjoyed if its felt within your soul. There must always be a deeper connection”, Sham says.
“A New Beginning” is the latest Pop/Hiphop album release by Sham Idrees on Prestige Prophet Records. The album also features some endearing guest appearances by the likes of Hani, Kaled, Jessica Anbara and Tre Downey.
The album steamrolls out with “I Know You Feel It” featuring Hani. Who delivers some spitfire rhymes catapulted over a bouncy party beat, you can sense just a touch of a Latino rhythm trying to break through, as Sham smooths in with his chunky, chocolate chip vocals. This will keep you dancing all night.
“I Swear” pops up almost unexpectedly. It has a quick Euro-pop style beat, with an insistant scratching guitar rhythm and the ever so sweet Sham Idrees vocal, which keeps the song clean, cute and neat.
“Oh Aliyah” shoots us back to the hiphop breaks, with Hani once again delivering his rapid fire hooks, which play off as a cool counter to Sham’s sugary crisp vocals. It’s like the good-guy meets bad-boy thing and it really works well, because even when the songs dig in deep, they stay light and bouncy.
“The Situation” features Khaled and is laid down over another sprawling upbeat background, which sounds like it’s running down a highway. Sham holds it all together with a nice tight and catchy melody line. This is one of my favorite tracks.
There’s no doubt, that the songs featuring Hani, are on a slightly higher level compared to the rest, as his rap style gives Sham’s songs that harder hood edge, which is so necessary in this genre, if you want credibility. “Just Be My Girlfriend” gets even better as it also features Khaled. Together with Sham, the three ship out a really convincing performance.
Other highlights on the album include “We Can Glide”, another full throttle dance track with a great melody and some neat harmony arrangements. On “Thank God”, Sham openly and joyously, bares his spiritual reflections to the world. While on the mid tempo “My Little Angel” he shares center stage with the angelical voice of Jessica Anbara. Who turns out to be yet another delightful duetting partner and a perfect match for Sham’s vocal timbre.
The racing upbeat acoustic guitar and piano driven “Fool”, is also up there amongst the best and it goes without saying that it features the talents of Hani. Which ultimately draws me to the conclusion that Sham and Hani make a really formidable team. Hani keeps the hiphop undertones thick and solid, while Sham throws in his natural talent for pop melodies and his almost joyous vocal deliveries. This is a match made in heaven.
There are no ads, please add some
“A New Beginning” in fact, is an album that permeates with Sham’s absolute joy for life. Even during the reflective soul searching moments, there is a tangible aura of hope and faith that comes shining through each and every track.
If you’re into danceable pop, hiphop and rap without all the heavy gangster connotations you may well want to get hold of this album by Sham Idrees.
