Scan Hopper is not your ordinary mainstream radio band! So if you need catchy hooks, power riffs or machine-gun rap rhymes to enjoy your music. Please dont read this! However if you adore layers of eclectic sounds, lush harmonies, and intelligent lyrics all buried in a bed of creative rhythms, where substance overides structure, then Scan Hopper is your band!
The “Mariana Bridges EP (gapless version)” steers the Scan Hopper sound to further uncharted territory, which speaks even greater volumes about their talent. It only slightly resembles the Scan Hopper 2 album that I had the pleasure of reviewing sometime in April this year. This new Ep is pop stretched to its limitation, with far more melody and harmony than previously seen from the group.
The EP features Scott Hopkins, David Thomas Jones, Ryan Nelson, Brian Purington and Rachael Shaw. The Ep was recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Scott in the North Forest between Dec 2011 – Nov 2013. Which, if my memory serves me correctly, is pretty much the same team from the Scan Hopper 2 album.
The artist actually intends for the Ep to be heard as one complete track without any gaps or breaks. So on streaming from Bandcamp the seven songs appears as only one 13 minute track.
The Mariana Bridges EP is one of those releases that you never get tired of hearing and one which you can put on to get away from the world for a while. The music on here touches shoegaze, rock and dreamy pop with traces of psychedelic sounds. If you are a true lover of alternative music or something that moves far away from the beaten track, you’ll want to add this to your collection.
I’m constantly impressed by the complex harmonies and instrumentation, as all the songs flow in and out of each other beautifully. This Ep is for any free thinker with great tastes in music. Like all good artists, this album is an experience that flows like a dream.
Scan Hopper have created that perfect mix of groove/experiment/psychedelia and rock and roll with this new Ep. For fans who want that acid dripping neo-psychedelia, this band currently plays it better than anyone else on earth!
The Ep forges ahead into new sonic territory while still being recognizable as mainstream music. Overall, I believe this to be Scan Hopper’s best work. This is music you can trip out to, something hardly anyone else is doing. I’m just thankful that Scott Hopkins and the gang are around to give us their fresh, unique take on psych music, and hope they continues doing so for a long time to come.
The Mariana Bridges EP is a genre all to itself. Yes, mostly rock, but so, so much more. It, like pretty much everything Scan Hopper produces, is transcendental, harmonious and creative-as-all-hell, but this is beautiful and a joy in dare I say maturity. The music is wonderfully contained and the multi-layered tracks flow freely but not independently within a spacious bound…that is one long track. Brilliant!
