Rubix Wheel: “Sky’s the Limit” is a fine album, focused and complete.

“Sky’s the Limit” is a great mix of everything you would expect from a band like Rubix Wheel.

rubix-wheel-400Rubix Wheel began in 2007 as the Jester Jack Band, playing some midsized festivals.  In 2010 they changed the name to Rubix Wheel, and have completed 3 tours of Ohio since 2012. Rubix incorporates classic rock songs with their originals, making them a hybrid band that can play all kinds of venues.  This Fall has been a breaking point for Rubix Wheel, as they have seen bigger crowds and better shows than ever.  In August this year they got together to record the “Sky’s the Limit” album at Amerisound Studios. Rubix Wheel is Jack O’Handley – Guitars/Vocals, Paul Kish – Drums, Kendall Denton – Bass, Josh Sowders – Keyboards.

“Sky’s the Limit” meets and exceeds every possible expectation. The cohesive sound of a tightly knit rock and roll band, combined with compelling lyrical prowess, makes this album an easy pick for any rock music fan and often surpasses the simple ‘jamband’ nametag that sometimes accompanies their sound.

This is a solid rock-based album with flashes of poppy, funky, dreamy and  jazzy overtones and influences. If you are into jam bands, or alternative rock, then this is for you. Rubix Wheel deliver 11 tracks which serve as a statement of what the band sees and is able to capture musically. “Sky’s the Limit” is a fine album, focused and complete. It is refreshing, because the band is doing what it does, naked and raw as it would in live appearances, never losing its core vitality and all-round dynamism.

“Sky’s the Limit” is a great mix of everything you would expect from a band like Rubix Wheel, plus some nice surprises as well. They showcase multi-faceted songwriting and provide listener with some haunting lyrics along the way. Jack O’Handley sharpens his guitar playing and leaves his signature guitar sound all over the album. Band chemistry is definitely not a problem on here either, as the band crackles with intensity and a tight groove formed from a few years on the road.

What impressed me most about this album is the excellent production by Dan Green and song cycle chosen by the band. Green keeps the sounds separated, distinguishable and clean but never loses that live, ‘off-the-cuff’ playing atmosphere.

Rubix Wheel play simply, but straight to your emotions on this effort, and after playing the album through you are thinking: wow that blew me away, I need to play this again. That feeling occurred to me countless times, after tracks like “Camera”, “Coconut Candy”, “Mellow Dreams”, “Garden”, “The Lot” and “Giggle”.

rubix-wheel-300Featuring a good mixture of jamming, fun songs, and thoughtful ones, the interplay between each and every member shines throughout “Sky’s the Limit”, and serves as a good introduction to the group if you have any of your friends who are not yet Rubix Wheel fans.

Rubix Wheel with their release, “Sky’s the Limit”, is diverse and satisfying, especially when you need something to keep your brain open and far away from all the posers in rock n’ roll!
