Negative Spaces is a band founded in Malta which is still growing into the music industry. Their aim is to produce their own music and sound, in conjunction with working hard to write music which listeners can relate to. Negative Spaces have already launched their debut single back in April 2011, with ‘Bk21qr1’ , a track which lead them to over 4,000 views on Youtube and a partnership with local anti-bullying campaign, ‘Celebrities for Kids’.
Their journey didn’t stop there. A year later the band released another single called Standing, which made it on the Bay Malta Charts and reigned at the first place for three whole consecutive weeks. Their third single, State of Mind has been released in August this year.
Negative Spaces consists of Gary Bugeja – Vocals, Kersten Graham – Lead Guitarist, Luca Spiteri – Rhythm Guitarist, Mark Micallef – Keyboard, Neville Mallia – Bass and Ryan Aguis – Drums.
This band has it all. Rock, pop, electronica, alternative, new wave and 80’s style…I mean how much better does it get? And they are a breath of fresh air from all of the thrashy rock bands that seem to dominate the UK and US. The Strokes, Muse, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand…it’s all there, which means Negative Spaces are one par with some of the coolest, hippest bands around.
If you already know this band and you’re reading this, I probably don’t need to tell you about Gary Bugeja’s haunting voice, I probably don’t need to tell you about the wonderfully infectious riffs and beats that are woven through this glorious new single, I don’t need to tell you how great in general Negative Spaces is, because I’m sure you already know!

For those who don’t, Negative Spaces bring something new to the table. They are like a band that got caught in a time warp during the new wave 80’s era and are just finding their way back now. But they are coming back to the future with their own mix of keyboards, guitars and catchy vocal hooks. Sounds like an odd combination until you listen to this band. Everything else sounds out of date in comparison!
The combination of instrumentation Negative Spaces use will get inside your blood, into your brain, into your soul and next thing you know you’ll be chanting “Take me up, Up up and down now. Spin me around, around and around now…”
Though ‘State Of Mind’ is the brand new scintillating single, I took the time to listen to ‘Standing’ and ‘Bk21qr1’ to make sure I was on the right track, and I was, as the layered production on the new single means there’s plenty of sounds to explore that aren’t initially obvious on the older singles. The keyboard throb, the dynamic drumming and the fervent rhythm section of the chorus, at the peak of State Of Mind are a perfect match for Bugeja’s vocal zeal. It is evident that Negative Spaces are continually exploring and expanding their craft…and they’re moving in the right direction too!
Seldom does a song come along that is worth listening to repeatedly. State Of Mind is one of those rare exceptions. Negative Spaces are a supremely talented band and their music is truly addictive. I recommend this to fans of alternative, pop, rock and even dance, because all of these elements are perfectly blended in!
