Over the last few years Wolfsburg based, German rock musician, Matulla, has been churning out power anthems featuring a varied palette of guest singers, gathered on a global scale. Each song release is a blend of a solid musical soundscape, and an adventurous endeavor in storytelling. The track “Lonesome Wolf”, featuring the voice of Susan Olmos, is yet another of Matulla’s original ideas. The composer and songwriter created his own myth, which takes place in Wolfsburg City, the home of Matulla.
The legend of “Lonesome Wolf”, narrates a tale of the last wolf in Lower Sachsony, Germany, named Puck, being shot in the year 1872. Apparently, from then on the spirit of Puck could find no peace due to his wrongful killing. Hence, on some cold winter nights the people in the area of Alt Wolfsburg claimed that they heard his howling in the wind. It was a sign that something bad would happen.
So during the late nineteenth century, the residents of Alt Wolfsburg attempted to break the curse. The Earl of Schulenburg imposed a reward to anyone who would capture the spirit of Puck – the last wolf. The course was broken by an old witch whose name has since been forgotten. One night while the wolf was howling, the witch sang a song in the courtyard of the castle.
People say the witch’s voice was so beautiful, that it calmed the homeless ghost of Puck. After that night no one ever heard a wolf howling again in the district of Wolfsburg. This is the ominous premise for “Lonesome Wolf”, which comes out of the gate with growling, overdriven guitars, banging drums, and an incessant rock groove, while singer Susan Olmos adds an ethereal mellifluous edge to the proceedings.
Recorded, written, produced and performed by Matulla, with Susan Olmos perfectly embellishing the track with her vocal prowess, “Lonesome Wolf”, once again showcases the all-round songwriting and performing chops, Matulla brings to the table.
Not just content to write a great song, the artist delivers an overarching concept and an interesting theme with his music. This is something he applies to almost all his releases, which a quick run through his back catalog will confirm.
Matulla is a creative with a powerful vision for his songs. While the musical scale is grand, his story telling abilities are just as strong. Each of his releases expands his sonic pallet with a variety of instrumentation, influences, and effects.
Matulla is a forward-thinking musician, continually advancing his craft, while at the same time, introducing us to a myriad of eclectic singers – male and female. He is at his best when he’s focusing on creating atmospheric and melodic, yet broadly accessible rock music.
“Lonesome Wolf” is a fine example of that aforementioned factor. Matulla has succeeded fully in bringing an intelligent, mature work of melodic rock to the modern world. “Lonesome Wolf” sets out to show that catchy, rock based material can still be written with depth and substance, and it does so brilliantly.
