Josh “J Duff” Duffey is an independent hip hop artist from South Jersey. After growing up with a deep love for all things music and teaching himself guitar, he began to write rhymes at the end of his senior year in high school. After hearing his friends spit rhymes and believing he could do better, he went home and wrote “I Hate High School”, a track which eventually would virally find thousands of listeners online.
Once he started writing, it became an addiction, and every spare second was devoted to rhyming. He set up his own home studio and released his first mixtape “Porn For The Blind” on Oct 30, 2011. Not content to stop there, J Duff enlisted the help of producer DJ Naydee to work with him on his debut album appropriately titled “The Introduction”, released Feb 12, 2012.
The album sets off with “Can’t Stop Me Now” a groovy danceable rhythm under a T-Pain-like vocal chorus, splashed with J Duff’s surefire rhymes and a great melody line. This is a catchy r n’ b based tune and great album opener.
“The Introduction” is J Duff’s autobiographical introduction to his public. He gives us the lowdown on his thoughts and life experiences, using his cocky and bitter rap style over a slow boiling backbeat.
“Closer To my Dreams” is rhymed over a simple and bubbly beat, while “Prepare For Glory” comes screaming out at you with it’s heavy cinematic arrangement and orchestrations.
Songs like “Twisted” and “Gotta Get Away” parades J Duff’s cool and funkier side, with some flawless partying beats and lovely vocal harmonies.
“Lonely” is a soulful, laid back journey into the world of brooding r’n’b. There’s a strong euro-synth influence there as well and the essence of the song is to uplift and gain positivity in difficult situations and love-relationships.
J Duff has a lot of soul and sings like a man who has experienced pain and happiness. He has an original and honest voice that oozes serenity and genuine meaning. The beats roll along in a well orchestrated fashion. They’re quite minimal, simple and have a roots feel, while the vocal harmonies are beautifully and tastefully crafted.
The variegated album contains real feel good tracks like ‘I Could Be’ and tongue-in-cheek sexy songs like ‘Lick The Lollipop’ or even thug tracks like ‘The Funeral’. Throughout the music always compliments the mood of the lyrics and never overpower you.

The production differs from the usual, ultra fake r’n’b, we hear so much of these days. Thanks primarily to J Duff’s real poetic rhyming and scrumptious singing style. Plus the implementation of euro-synth arrangements, ultimately used so successfully by Akon on recent tracks, adds a brighter side to the music.
“The Introduction” album has undoubtedly got a luminous and positive vibe streaming into it’s mixes.
