It’s amazing and echoes of every band that you’ve ever loved from the past like the Yardbirds to The Monkees to The Small Faces and The Rolling Stones to pub rock, punk and all the way to current Europop dance rhythms. Their influences spread out and engulf modern music. Listening to Hooyoosay is like reading Nietzche for the first time. At once both familiar and unique, you know you are listening to the source. You have heard this music before, only you have previously heard its imitators!
Hooyoosay dabble in the past and play with the future. They drag out covers and stir in some originals, all the time dipping into an immense baggage of rock n’ roll elements, dance rhythm essentials and party music rudiments. This is practically classic Pub rock dragged into the new century by its ears!
A mysterious bunch with no bio or band member info to be found anywhere, Hooyoosay have released “In dekay”, an eclectic 22 track album covering lesser known Rolling Stones songs that were originally recorded in the mid-sixties. With a myriad of terrific covers, this compilation will impress the harshest critic with the group’s ability to take on songs from this classic rock and roll spectrum and deliver them as if they were Hooyoosay originals. Call it chemistry or any word that comes to mind but these guys are magically authentic in their deliveries. A quick listen to “Time Is On My Side”, “Mercy Mercy” or even “Little by Little” is enough to boggle the mind. It’s hard to believe that these tracks were recorded a little longer than five minutes ago and not during the mid-sixties with Producer Phil Spector behind the mixing desk.

Hooyoosay has also released a new Ep entitled “Don’t You Lie To Me”. Kicking off with the title track, I wasn’t sure if I was listening to Psy’s “Gagnam Style” or Ian Drury and The Blockheads in their heyday. Tossed casually in-between this heterogeneous mix of songs, out popped the marching instrumental “Yooplaaa!”, which would make a perfect soundtrack to Nintendo’s SuperMario videogame!
Hooyoosay are very hard to pin down or categorize, moving from the brilliantly authentic sounding Rolling Stones re-works, to the playful and fun “Don’t You Lie To Me” Ep, these guys cover a whole lot of ground with almost nothing in common. Compared to athletics, it would be like a 100m sprint champion, who runs and wins the marathon too! Uncanny.
Whether you’re an old school fan looking for something to reminisce about, or a newbie who fancies a drop of fun filled, feel good music, you can’t go wrong with this. Within the first 3 minutes you’ll have your foot tapping, a stiff one poured and you’ll be ready for the ride.
All things said Hooyoosay have put together an utterly fantastic collection. They are absolute masters of those three minute catchy dittos on black vinyl, which everyone used to spend 99 pence a throw on, back in the 70’s.
