In the Northern European marketplace there are countless great melodic-metal acts, Finnish band Exiled Genesis is no exception. The band, which consists of members, Marko Mäkinen – Vocals, Steve Mathieu – Guitar, Backing Vocals, Aleksi Tossavainen – Guitar, Tuomas Niska – Bass, Mikael Björkman – Keyboard, Piano and Roger More – Drums, plays many different styles of metal – from melodic heavy metal to groove metal. After their 2014 EP, “Chatting With a Reaper”, the band has recently released their new single “Am Dying”.
From the opening bars of “Am Dying” onward, the listener is captivated by Exiled Genesis’ ability to mix pure brutality and melody. Steve’s guitar spews fire and ice, while Tuomas’ bass is low and rumbling, providing a great back drop for the guitar and Mikael’s well-placed keyboards. Roger’s drumming is perfectly calculated. He is able to use complex styles and always seems to add the right touch to the song. Then of course you have Marko, who’s growling voice sounds better than ever.
Since their earlier works, Exiled Genesis has developed a unique sound that places them in a heavy metal category of their own. The music is heavy, yet melodic and uplifting. Production is very clear, and the sound is varied and distinct. Although, by their own terms, they don’t break too much new ground on this single – the strength of the effort lies in their refined songwriting and focused musical approach.
The soaring lead guitar sets the tone as climaxes build and are subsequently offset by more compact and focused rhythm guitar passages. Marko Mäkinen’s potent bark rips through the lyrical inspiration that expresses the anguish of a soul caught between destiny and reality. Burning the bridges between death, thrash, black, melodic and groove-metal sub-genres, Exiled Genesis create a new metropolis where frozen inspiration comes together in burning metallic passion.
It’s really hard to describe the sheer intensity, depth and intelligence of this band. For example their use of keyboards is very clever, especially since it’s not excessive. It truly gives their melodic-metal a sort of “progressive” feel.
“Am Dying” is bursting with its own brand of heaviness, fast and intricate lead lines, and a rawness that many bands do not have. This track is packed with energy that just makes you want to get up and head-bang about the room!
