Eddie and the Lovemakers were started in Stockholm by singer Eddie Hultén. The band has just released a 360° video clip for the track “Good Time Joe”. They are one of the first indie bands in Sweden to have produced this video format. This track is just as infectious as the others that came before it. Listeners will find it hard to not bob their heads to this song here. The band has made a career of its grab-bag of musical influences, and “Good Time Joe” provides no exception to the genre-bending soul-pop songs the band creates.
Rhythmic and hypnotic percussion, the flow of stabbing horns, and strong hints of a jangly strummed guitar – This brand of infectious upbeat soul-pop draws its influences from the 60’s and 70’s Stax, Motown and Philly Soul trains and a lot more. All the elements fuse together for a unique sound that is distinctively Eddie and the Lovemakers.
The almost 4 minutes of pulsing, swirling genius is spearheaded by the rapturing, and rasping voice of Eddie Hultén, whose singing soul jumps out at you like nothing I have heard in quite some time. Lots of retro soul outfits have come down the pike in recent years, but to my ears, none sound more authentic than these guys. They sound like they were just transported from 1963.
Eddie and the Lovemakers can play. They take the listener through amazing tempos, time signature switches, and other sophisticated musical mastery that just sets them far above most other small groups playing today. Yet at the same time they sound raw, instinctive and deeply rooted in their organic soundscapes.
However as much as you go round and round, evaluating every nuance of this band, you’ll always come back to singer Eddie Hultén who is a force of nature, one to be reckoned with, and he makes it count on every Eddie and the Lovemakers recording. Simple and passionate in his delivery Eddie Hultén is absolutely soulful and dreamy and lusty and sweet, all at the same time.
If you don’t lose your mind and possibly your heart, listening to “Good Time Joe” and watching the video clip for the track then you should go back and find the band’s self-titled debut EP. And once you’ve done that, take a listen to the combination of horns, organ and Hultèn’s voice on “Afraid”. Now jump to the sublime “I See The World”. Suddenly the bland sameness of today’s Top 40 music will be shattered by what you hear.
This is one of those bands you don’t expect in 2016, and aren’t quite sure what to make of, and yet once you listen to them a couple of times, they will become one of those bands you will continue listening to for the rest of your life. Eddie and the Lovemakers is in a place right now that most musicians only dream of being – Pure, honest expression, unpretentious and compelling.
