Caloe: “Graham Crackers & Applesauce” – getting a grip on life and its sometimes weird absurdities

The Naperville (IL) born/Danville (IN) 21 year-old, Caloe, is a rapper who studies Electronic-Media-Focused-Communication and Creative Writing at Indiana State University. He is musically inspired by variety. He recorded both his full length album and EP at The Lodge Recording Studios in Indianapolis, IN, engineered by award winner Corey Miller.

Caloe’s 5-track EP is entitled “Graham Crackers & Applesauce”. He seems to have put a lot into this EP, but it never sounds too busy or jam-packed. With a candid attitude at the top to simple observations spread throughout, Caloe is quite direct with his views at times but also relaxed and reflective with random thoughts (always with meaning) at others.

Caloe-250Likewise, the feelings and pace of the EP are excited and lively in spots, thanks to Fles (Prod. Hood2Handle) with its unique lyrical drill and its vibrant instrumentation, while warm, synth sounds give Pause (Prod. ProLee93), a more chill, easy-breezy atmosphere. In either instance though, Caloe is always ready to adapt correctly in rhyme and song, to whatever vibe the production has cooked up. He even takes the time to quickly sing a sweet a cappella on Intro (Clutter).

“Graham Crackers & Applesauce” is a little bizarre, but in a good way. Caloe vacillates between brash, young adult mind-meandering, sex-inspired truth-talk, and some serious introspection with amazing rhymes, lots of heart, emotion, and wide-ranging vocal skill. His sound takes a few turns in different directions and feel, and it seems as though the music reflects where Caloe was at, effectively, during the EP’s recording.

The production on “Graham Crackers & Applesauce” is solid and crisp while Caloe’s lyricism and imagery is strong. Caloe expresses a lot of disdain and uncertainty about life, love, sex and the future but without feeling flustered, as he fearlessly plunges into life’s realities headfirst as brave as can be. Caloe is brilliantly poignant, pensive and profound with his thoughts, even though he works 360° to wrap his head around an infinity of ideas, all at the same time!

“Graham Crackers & Applesauce” fosters personal evaluation and getting a grip on life and its sometimes weird absurdities. On it, Caloe is focused and grinding his way through a stack of remnant vibes. Enjoy a great EP from a unique hiphop voice, whose character and sensibilities are eclectic and widespread.
