Antun Foster Presents Past-Present-Future Volume 1 – a substantial slice of excellence

Detroit native and go-to musical director to the stars, Antun Foster has brought forth his 18 track album “Antun Foster Presents Past-Present-Future Volume 1”, which sums up a substantial slice of the musical excellence he has delivered to the praise and worship arena. Anybody who avidly listens to Gospel music will be aware of his phenomenal work.  Cutting through to the essence of faith has been a recurring theme in Foster’s music and it is what connects one song to another as he fuses classic R&B arrangements with gospel choral backing vocals.

The release of this latest album is enough evidence to see that Foster’s music holds the ability to encourage those who lack faith, and strengthen those who have faith.  This project is brilliant and to be honest, it contains his best work to date. “Larger Than Life”, the first track after the opening, “Welcome To The Lab”,  captures listeners attention within the first 30 seconds and is a great representation of the album overall.

Many of these songs are not your ordinary Gospel songs and I was immediately drawn in by the sound, the arrangements and the powerful vocals – male or female – on the entire record.  Goosebumps will form on your arm as you listen to the smooth harmonies and empowering messages.  Not many Gospel musicians can match and merge styles, sounds and genres as effortlessly, but this comes as no surprise, as most are aware of Antun Foster’s musical capabilities.

Absorb the essential sounds as the album moves through different flavored standout tracks as “Leap for Joy” ft. Dodi Alexander, “I’ve Got a Feeling”, “When Only God Knows” and “You Alone Are Worthy”. Relish in the lush reworking of “Ain’t No Need to Worry” featuring the stunning vocals of Mario Winans. Stand back and adore Terrell Carter’s mellifluous rendition of “His Coming On A Cloud” or J-Fella’s street urban edge on “The Passion”.

Listening to “Antun Foster Presents Past-Present-Future Volume 1”, the impression is that there has been a lot of work and effort put into the songs in this project. The tracks are very well arranged, and the musicianship is impressive. There are some innovative chord progressions in some songs that really impressed me, while the vocals and harmonies are on point just about everywhere.

The reason I love this project is that Antun Foster blends the old with the new, keeping his musical arrangements both contemporary yet traditional. Foster never forgets the root of good gospel music and always incorporates it in his projects.
