Just Between Us : “Sour” – pure and dynamic, while the lyrics aims straight for the heart

The award-winning, Just Between Us are a young contemporary Australian vocal duo, consisting of Chelsea Berman and Delaney Boschuetz who formed after winning a Central Coast Talent competition in 2012. They have a country/folk sound which is enhanced by the guitar and ukulele and their angelic harmonies. They enjoy putting their own spin on a variety of covers, but also perform their original music.

Just Between Us have supported Casey Donovan in concert, vocal group Encore and performed with Kasey Chambers and her band. They are a regular fixture at many local venues, but have also played at a variety of larger events including the Mo Entertainment Awards, Central Coast Academy of Sports Awards night, the Central Coast Country Music Festival and the Westpac Helicopter Rescue Service Ball.

Just Between Us has released two Ep’s “Unplugged” and “Two Doors”.  Their first Ep of all original music, “Someday”, was launched in May 2015.

These young ladies have powerful, clear voices that articulate well. The single, “Sour”, though bittersweet in lyrical content, has an up-beat acoustic-driven country-pop sound which is the perfect soundtrack for a long summer of driving with the top down.

Though “Sour” comes from the “Two Doors” Ep, which includes covers of songs by Sheppard, The Dixie Chicks, Vance Joy and Journey, what makes Just Between Us stand out, in not only country-tinged music, but the majority of contemporary music as well, is their well-crafted songwriting skills showcased on “Sour”.

The song is clever and highlights the girls characters as carefree, but careful and observant beings. Their voices are angelic and harmonious as they tell the story of a cheating boy. Just Between Us don’t need watered down rock ‘n’ roll or hyped up electronic dance songs, like what the majority of young female singers are filling the radio with today. Their songs are very relatable and there performances are able to please everyone no matter what musical tastes prevail.

On “Sour” Chelsea Berman and Delaney Boschuetz voices are very pure and dynamic, while the lyrics aims straight for the heart. And the production by Adam Toole and Chris Byrne is top shelf too. Nuanced, developed, and realized. The sound itself is melodic and sensitive. This is the type of music that once came out of Nashville, before the ‘modern machinery’ got in the way. It is a testament to the strength of the material and talent showcased here – as well as the engineering and mixing by Adam Toole at The Garden Shed.

To me, “Sour” sounds fresh – like a summer breeze. And like a new love. With its delicate Pop-Americana vibe, you’ll probably have this song in constant rotation. I know I will.
