Guitarist Taweechok Kaewkam (a.k.a. DEAR_JAZZROCK) is a former artist with Sony Music, Thailand, who has success in the fields of Jazz, Blues, Rock, Latin, Fusion, Indie, and other progressive forms of contemporary music. He has achieved recognition nationally in his native Thailand, and internationally since he burst on to the New York club and concert scene in the last few years. If you’ve been listening to DEAR_JAZZROCK then you know that he leans toward composed pieces that allow room for interpretative soloing and often thundering conclusions that use guitar voicing’s for emotion and tension.
I have to say that he has a way of fitting what are his best qualities and sensibilities within each song’s settings. DEAR_JAZZROCK is ever present in the music, supportive when necessary but always soloing with such a keen sense of the piece he is playing and how his solo fits. He never goes off on tangents of fleet fingered but irrelevant solos. He adds so much warmth to the music this way.
Listening to a few tracks, in his catalog, it is clear that DEAR_JAZZROCK’s sound, the expressiveness of his guitar, tone, note choice, and timbre is always intact, but it is his sense of orchestration and composition that will astound his audience and peers. The melodic developments and harmonic saturation is ineffable and defies emotional description on “Kirs”.
The accompanying band also plays very well together, with great sympathy and telepathy. The tracks are inventive and sound fresh and the recording engineer captured a great deal of ambience, which gives tracks like “Four Jazzrock” a live feel.
There is an amazing chemistry that took place on “Four Jazzrock” with DEAR_JAZZROCK’s jazz and lyrical post-bop sensibilities, combined with a supremely singing bass and the explosive yet detailed drumming. There are lots of wide-open spaces, and impressionistic pastel-like harmonies, which allow DEAR_JAZZROCK’s challenging, intricate melodies and solos to color the soundscape.
Both these cuts rise and surge then gently coincide revealing a smart melodic jazzy melody. The only gripe I have are that these pieces are very short, as I would have liked to have heard DEAR_JAZZROCK fully flesh out these arrangements. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more from Taweechok Kaewkam soon.
