‘Til You Drop: “When A Man Loves Another” – a powerful message on a dreamy soundscape

Listening to “When A Man Loves Another” feels like floating on an aural tide, rising and falling with the waves. Put on headphones, crank up the volume and feel the Roland piano lines pull you by the gut through almost 4 minutes of weightless atmosphere. I’ve heard a lot of music that gets lumped into the dream-pop category and very few leave you with same sense of exhilaration. It’s expansive, well-crafted, and well-produced.

Based vaguely on the 1966 classic “When A Man Loves A Woman” by Percy Sledge, and Recorded at Sea Studios, this track features the ROLAND Plus 400 Electronic Piano, which came out during 1984 and is very hard to find today. The piano has rich and warm tones which is evident on “When A Man Loves Another.”

‘Til You Drop features the talents of Alan Medlock, who somehow manages to drop a crystalline sonic veil, over a fuzzy world, making its outlines soft, warm and inviting. Calming, but moving, the music is beautiful and simple. It plays as a perfect backdrop to the lyrics, which more than anything else, is the focal point of “When A Man Loves Another.” The song is in support of gay people and the message is eloquently clear within its lyrics:
