Third Realm returns with an Electro-Rock infused single ready for the dance floor. “Sick Mind” features vocals by Aoife O’Leary of Moth Complex! “Sick Mind” is flat-out dynamite, easily ranking among my all-time favorites. Few other electronic singles blend song-craft, danceable undercurrents, haunting lyrical sensibilities and a ‘brute force’ beat as seamlessly as this one does. It ebbs and flows nicely between a driving rhythm and an emotive melody.
Every note is in place and nothing is there that shouldn’t be. The thing about Nathan Reiner is not just his great voice but his unique way of using it: “Sick Mind” demonstrates this beautifully. To the non-Murphy connoisseur, it almost sounds like he’s “scooping” the notes on every closing phrase. A lesser singer could never pull this off as well.
Aoife O’Leary’s pitch-perfect voice also works wonders on this track, together with Reiner, they hit the beauty and the darkness, often in the same phrase; sometimes conjuring up great poetic imagery in the space of three little words.
As in all of Reiner’s work, there’s real raw energy to this tune, and brilliant production duties. The bass drum sound is terrific and the collage of synths makes for some incredible tuneage. Overall “Sick Mind” is a searing track and a real toe-tapper which Reiner and O’Leary ruthlessly sink their teeth into.
This is one killer Third Realm song. It is as massively gorgeous, complex, powerful and self-assured as their previous releases. Definitely another piece to get into your collection of alternative electronic rock!
