Formed in 2012, The Urchins are an eclectic indie rock band from the outskirts of Glasgow, consisting of two sets of brothers and a close friend. All members are born from a shared vision of creativity and a burning ambition to be the biggest band in the world.
The band, whose gritty rock and roll tunes along with some indie acoustics give a foundation for a mesmerizing sound taking you on a journey back to the 60’s, is made up of: Steven O’Neill – Vocals, Simon Regan – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals, Chrissy O’Neill – Lead Guitar, Martyn Regan – Drums and Jonny Carroll – Bass Guitar.
Today The Urchins release their debut double-sided single, “I Feel A Fall Coming”, which is backed by “Getting Old Too Soon”. The single is out on Platform Records and will be distributed through all major digital download stores.
Believe the hype. The Urchins deliver a heady mix of swaggering beats, slinky riffs, and sophisticated out-on-the-tiles lyrics. Flashing hints of 1960’s, this amalgam of musical awesomeness has a not-too-sweet pop catchiness to them, without sacrificing any of the creativity and cleverness that the band should be rightfully known for.
The music shows an impressive ability to absorb ideas from other sources without sounding derivative. The jangling guitars are flawless while the drum and bass rhythm section is vigorous and inspiring. The singing is brilliant as well, together with the harmonies, which are never dominant nor overshadowed, always performing as the perfect melodious backdrop.
“I Feel A Fall Coming” is one addictive listen. I haven’t repeat listened to anything so much in months. The twanging guitars, with jaunty riffs, brash solos and unique brand of the ‘White Stripes-type’ drum rhythms makes this song totally irresistible. Tight, bright and bouncy, The Urchins deliver energy, but with mature and sophisticated song structures that are thoroughly enjoyable to any set of ears.
The Urchins not only surpass all the hype, but they make it sound effortless. If any doubt remained, this stunning single blows it away. These guys are the real deal. While listening to “I Feel A Fall Coming”, you’ll realize that this is a band that is fine-tuning its skill to create some wonderful music. Can’t wait to see where they go next!
