The people who decide the sounds of the future are the producers and songwriters of the present. They blend familiar sounds and emotional beats with modern-day lyrics and studio advancements, often capturing the world’s imagination with a mix of nostalgia and current innovation — throwback pop no longer has to sound plainly retro; even the past can pick up future sheen. This is exactly what English-born and Australian based producer Lyndon Rivers is getting up to lately. His latest creative effort is the single, “Heart To Heart”. This reminded me of the some music from the 50s, whimsical, with great energy. The track’s extremely unique and aesthetically pleasing style is a combination of pop, electronic, and 50s doo wop…without the doo wop!
Listening to “Heart To Heart” will make you want to find a pair of roller skates and a poodle skirt while you jam to this music. The female singer’s voice is beautiful and crystal-clear with a touch of playfulness in certain parts of the song. Rivers has injected the song with a sort of retro vibe which has the vocals and melody evocative of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but with modern-day electronics and percussion that lets you know it is of the moment.
It’s always so hard to predict what will become popular or next trend but I think people are responding to sincerity and honesty in music more than they have in a long time. It feels like there’s a shift towards people really seeking that connection to a truth regardless of the genre.
Despite what production model is in style, I think success will come for those who continue down the path of shining their spotlight on something that isn’t dependent on a mold. That seems to be more or less the road Lyndon Rivers is navigating now. If you listen to “Heart To Heart” and compare it to what’s going on in the electronic and EDM world in terms of production, you can see that his is walking along his own path.
Furthermore, on this track Lyndon has got hold of a singer who does justice to the piece, bringing a vocal track that is fresh, bubbly and on pitch. Over the past few years, there has been a boom in retro electronic music, more commonly known as synthwave. Inspired by 80s electropop, synthesizers, and film soundtracks, synthwave has spilled over into movies, and video games.
But Lyndon has gone more pop mainstream route than that, infusing “Heart To Heart” with a candy-sweet melody, and avoiding the abrasive saw tooth synths. Frankly, this track practically shows that there’s not really anything Lyndon Rivers can’t do!
