Jeannette Echeverria, born May 13 and better known as Cheena Black, is a Hispanic American singer-songwriter, recording engineer and graphic designer. Cheena Black has been plying her craft as a hip-hop, R&B and soul singer from the streets of Brooklyn since the age of 5. From 2010 through to 2012 she did work with Divine Records which featured other well-known artists like Dmx, Grand Puba, E-Smooth. She then released her mixtape PINK SAGA VOL1 in April of 2012, after which time she started working on follow-up mixtape called “BLACK 2 THE FUTURE”. This new mixtape, which also features June Marx of Twin Perils, is set for an August 2015 release.
Recently we had a sneak preview of “BLACK 2 THE FUTURE”. If there is justice in the musical universe, Cheena Black’s latest release will definitely introduce her to a much larger audience. There is, no doubt, that the singer poured all of her considerable vocal and creative talents into this most revealing and musically satisfying mixtape. It just delivers such an honest perspective of Cheena’s crossover craft. You’ll get emotion, varying tempos and a range of music styles.
On a mixtape wherein all the cuts are outstanding, you’ll find Cheena’s trademark forceful vocal performances, the brilliant beat arrangement, and extraordinary track selection. Cheena’s singing has gained a sense of maturity and she inhabits the songs with feel of someone who has experienced life’s ups and downs and is comfortable singing about both. She doesn’t dodge notes and this allows her to really sing through the phrases and channel the strength of her convictions through her voice. The background vocals and harmonies are tight too.
Here on “BLACK 2 THE FUTURE”, Cheena Black’s voice is much better in tune while still keeping the same raw emotion that she has within her powerhouse vocals. In fact, Cheena’s vocals have grown more and more emotional with a greater coarseness that provides for a magnificent texture on her recordings. Listening to her older material, you will notice that Cheena is one of the few artists who continues to build her craft better and better with each subsequent recording.
The raw, viscerally arresting power and emotion Cheena pours into this work is astounding. She proves that contemporary urban music can contain soul, and not just groove. Though we cannot give you track titles, or any other creative and production credits, with everything still very much under wraps before the release date, we can confirm that “BLACK 2 THE FUTURE”, sounds like Cheena Black’s best work so far!
